One Arrested In Fatal Shooting Of Memphis Officer

by Kim Lyons

Less than 24 hours after a Memphis police officer was fatally shot during a traffic stop, police have arrested a person connected to Sean Bolton's death, according to Memphis newspaper The Commercial Appeal. Officials apparently don't believe the person is the shooter, but someone allegedly related to the incident. The unnamed person was taken into custody Sunday at an apartment building in Memphis' Hickory Hill neighborhood, The Commercial Appeal reported, and is so far being referred to by police simply as a "person of interest."

Bolton, 33, a five-year member of the Memphis police force and an Iraq War veteran, was shot multiple times Saturday night by someone in a car he pulled over, according to CNN. Memphis police said the shooter ran away from the scene, setting off a massive manhunt. Memphis Mayor A C Wharton told the Associated Press that Bolton's death "speaks volumes about the inherent danger of police work."

Residents of the housing complex where the arrest occurred early Sunday morning told The Commercial Appeal that police officers surrounded the building and started banging on doors around 5 a.m. As of Sunday night, no charges had yet been filed against the person Memphis police arrested, police department spokeswoman Karen Rudolph told the AP.

Police said a civilian passerby had used Bolton's own police radio to call for help following the shooting. He had been shot multiple times, and died at the hospital of his injuries a short time later.

Memphis Director of Police Services Toney Armstrong told the AP that Bolton was the third Memphis officer killed in the line of duty in the past four years. According to USA Today, Officer Tim Warren was killed in 2011, and Officer Martoiya Lang was killed in 2012.

Bolton was wearing a bulletproof vest but apparently was not wearing a body camera when he was shot, according to NBC News.

As for the person who allegedly shot Bolton, Memphis police identified Tremaine Wilbourn as the suspected gunman Sunday evening. Wilbourn is still at large and considered armed and dangerous. A first-degree murder warrant has been issued for Wilbourn's arrest.
