FBI Joins The Hillary Clinton Investigation

by Lauren Barbato

According to a Washington Post report, the FBI is investigating Hillary Clinton's email server, adding to the unusual scandal that has followed the Clinton throughout her 2016 presidential campaign. FBI investigators are reportedly checking out the security of Clinton's personal email server, which was used in place of her government-issued email while she served as secretary of state. Clinton had installed her own email server in her house in Chappaqua, New York, and never once used her official "dot gov" address, even for classified information. Now, the Department of Justice apparently has cause to worry.

FBI sources confirmed to The Washington Post that investigators have contacted both a technology company in Denver that managed the private email server, and Clinton's lawyer, David Kendall. Clinton's lawyer confirmed to the news source that "the government is seeking assurance about the storage of those materials," including possible classified information that was sent or received over the unsecured server.

NBC News also independently confirmed on Wednesday that the FBI is investigating Clinton's private email server, which was kept in her New York home. FBI officials have made it clear that this is not an investigation into Clinton, and so far, the former secretary of state has not been held responsible for any wrongdoing.

This new investigation into Clinton's private email server comes just weeks after the Justice Department was alerted in July about a possible breach of security concerning classified information. The DOJ said it received a request from government inspectors to look into the possible security breach of sensitive information. Although The New York Times initially reported last month that Clinton herself may be under criminal investigation, the Justice Department insisted that a criminal investigation against Clinton was not going to be opened.

Yet Emailgate has become a major issue the Clinton 2016 campaign can't run away from. It's unclear just how much this specific email scandal is hurting the former secretary of state's popularity among Democratic voters, but recent polls suggest the Clinton campaign needs to heat up. A Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll released Monday revealed Clinton is losing support, particularly among white women. In July, just 34 percent of white women had a favorable view of Clinton, compared to 44 percent in June.
