And 'World War Z's Sequel Director Is...

by Alanna Bennett

The first World War Z may have gotten some uneven reviews — but hell, when has that stopped Hollywood doing literally anything? Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is getting a sequel. Let that sink in. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. In other words, people didn't riot over World War Z and they threw a lot of their money at it, so it's getting a sequel. And that World War Z sequel now has a director: Juan Antonio Bayona.

More well-known as J.A. Bayona, he broke out in 2007 with the horror flick The Orphanage, which Guillermo del Toro produced, and got an Oscar nomination for The Impossible.

Info on this World War Z sequel is as of yet sparse; all we really know is that the original film was initially envisioned the start of a trilogy, but that the ending was changed. Well, a sequel's going forward, so it's just going to have to open itself up again. Currently no writers as assigned to the project — not even Drew Goddard, who wrote the original one and who is now working on the upcoming Daredevil show for Netflix.

As for Bayona himself, it seems a whole lotta people have a whole lotta confidence in him: The Hollywood Reporter wrote that "The Spanish director has shown an ability to juggle scares, drama and big sequences," so it seems he's already getting good reviews.
