Three People Were Shot In Sunset, Alabama

by Jenny Hollander

On Wednesday evening, what was initially reported by local media to be a hostage situation in a Sunset, Louisiana store erupted into gunfire, with three people hurt, including a police officer. Local station KLFY reported that a man barricaded himself into the store, and police were on the scene; the Associated Press reported that the officer was "responsive," and was airlifted to a nearby hospital. Another person was transported to a hospital. Louisiana station KATC TV3 wrote on Twitter: "This Instagram photo apparently depicts the scene in Sunset. The user says a suspect was in the store with a shotgun." Update: A male suspect is in custody after a SWAT team breached the office door he was barricaded behind. The situation allegedly started as a domestic disturbance. Two people were stabbed several blocks away from the store, but there are no details on their injuries.

As the situation unfolded, it emerged that there were no hostages. To clear up any misinformation, The Washington Post's Elahe Izadi tweeted Wednesday: "So, this is what happened in Sunset, Louisiana, per sheriff: suspect stabbed 2 people, shot officer, drove car into Exxon, 3 ppl inside fled." The police department confirmed to the AP that a police officer had been wounded and was in the process of being treated, but few other details are known.

Acadian Companies, which owns health services, including ambulances, tweeted: "Acadian is responding to a shooting in Sunset. 8 ambulances, 3 helicopters responding ... Update: Air Med is currently transporting one patient ... We understand that St. Landry EMS is also transporting a patient via ground. 2 total transports so far ... One helicopter and 4 ground units are standing by the shooting scene in Sunset."
