American Kids Try International School Lunches

by Kat George

There's nothing like being little and being forced to try new foods, like these American kids trying school lunches from other countries. When you're a kid, what you know is all you know, and your world view is so limited that anything other than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich at recess is simply absurd (for me it was a Vegemite sandwich, obviously — Australians represent). Forget other countries. Forget different cultures. For children, what they're used to is what works, which is why having them try new things can turn up the most hilarious of results. Not in the least because kids don't mince words, or facial expressions for that matter.

Cut Video asked children from America to try diverse school lunches from around the world, from places as disparate as India, Sweden, Japan, Cuba, France, Kenya, and Afghanistan. While sometimes disgust wasn't remotely concealable, the discovery of a delightful new taste sensation was as emphatically pronounced. While we'd hope that most of these kids would grow into worldly adults anyway (although weirdly enough, I still meet people who have never eaten Indian food, for instance), watching them try new things for the first time is pretty damn fun, and a reminder of all the times you screwed your nose up at something foreign to you when you were a child. Here are some of the best reactions:

1. Honest And Unappetizing Descriptions

2. Total Physical Disgust

3. Employment Of Hyperbole

4. Outright Adoration

5. Misplaced Enthusiasm
