The 2015 VMAs Red Carpet Looks A Lot Like 1999's

by Alysse Dalessandro

The MTV Video Music Awards is the one awards show where you can expect to see some of the most outrageously memorable red carpet moments, and the 2015 MTV VMAs is no exception. However, while many things about the VMAs have changed since Madonna first graced its stage in 1984, when it comes to VMA red carpet fashion, it's clear some trends are beginning to repeat itself.

Last year, Amber Rose wore a Laurel Dewitt barely there chain dress reminiscent of Rose McGowan's booty-bearing number in 1998. Katy Perry and Riff Raff donned matching full denim get-ups reminiscent of Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake at the 2001 American Music Awards. While both of these looks got mixed reviews, they showed us that shock value fashion never goes out of style.

With Miley Cyrus hosting the show and Jeremy Scott designing the new Moon Man statue, I expected to see a club kid sea punk aesthetic make its way to the red carpet. Think bold colors, faux fur, big platforms, sequins galore and maybe even a freed nipple or two. Hell, Cyrus is the one who re-created Lil Kim's infamous 1999 purple pasty look/lace jumpsuit combo for Halloween. And while her red carpet look ended up being more Barbarella than Queen Bee, there was still quite a few trending moments that looked pre-Y2K familiar.

While Katie Stevens isn't sporting a purple wig and matching pasty, I can't help but see the similarities in these lace looks.

2. High Slits & Black Fringe

The resemblance between VJ Ananda Lewis' 99 VMA look and Ciara's 2015 look is uncanny.

3. Pink Faux Fur

Baddie Winkle is the red carpet standout for me this year and her pink faux fur coat totally reminds me of Pamela Anderson's marabou hat in 1999.

4. Sequin Two Pieces

Taylor Swift's sequin harem pants and matching crop put a modern spin on Denise Richard's '99 belly-baring look.

5. Leather On Leather

Not sure what would possess anyone to wear all leather in July other than it looks totally badass on Jada Pinkett-Smith in '99 and Nick Jonas on this year's red carpet.

Seeing Amber Rose and her crew on the red carpet brought me right back to the era when R&B girl groups like TLC reigned supreme and always came through with matching looks.
