Kylie Jenner Stars In Tyga's New Video As A Zombie

Their controversial relationship has now been sealed in music video form, again: As expected, the star of Tyga's zombie-filled "Dope'd Up" video is Kylie Jenner. The 18-year-old reality TV star and 25-year-old rapper — who are dating IRL, in case you didn't know — appear as high school sweethearts in the spooky music video, which was released on Oct. 30, right before Halloween. (It's the second music video that Jenner has appeared in for Tyga — the first was for Tyga's song "Stimulated.") While waiting in a car after seeing a scary movie, Tyga drifts off into a spooky Halloween dream in which he and Kylie explore a landscape straight out of a horror movie. But, luckily, he wakes up in relief to find that it was all a dream... or was it?

The video includes a clear homage to a series of cultural touchstones, and all-in-all, it's pretty campy. Spooky camp can be great, of course — just look at Michael Jackson's "Thriller"! — and there are elements of this video that seem promising — but it's hard to ignore that there's a strange disconnect between the song and the video. The song has barely anything to do with horror films, zombies, werewolves, or ghosts, but the video seems to be like "Thriller" redux. At least when Jackson did something like this, the song was equally as campy creepy as the video.

However, it's still worth paying homage to the sheer amount of classic horror movie references the "Dope'd Up" video was able to include. First, check out the video in full, then take a look at 'em:

Michael Jackson's "Thriller"

Everything from the lengthy introduction to the letterman jackets to the two sweethearts watching scary movies together is a clear homage to Jackson's most famous video.

The Hills Have Eyes

Tyga and Kylie find their (Rolls Royce) car broken down in a seemingly abandoned area. While this happens in a lot of scary movies, it's most notable in The Hills Have Eyes.

A-ha's "Take On Me"

The iconic a-ha video featured comic strip effects interspersed with live-action shots and has since been often imitated in music videos and movies. This only appears for a couple of frames in Tyga's video, but it's there.

The Ring

There are lots of creepy little girls in horror movies that "Dope'd Up" could have referenced, but Samara Morgan's character in The Ring might be the creepiest.

Poltergeist

The flickering television sets are a clear reference to this classic.

The Shining

Two twins make an appearance to scare Tyga and Kylie, just like the twins from The Shining .

Frankenstein

This evil scientist is another one of those almost universal horror tropes, but Dr. Frankenstein is the source material.

A Nightmare On Elm Street

The blurring of reality between real life and dreaming that happens at the very end is classic horror film trope, but it's best associated with A Nightmare on Elm Street.

The Walking Dead

The zombies in the film might be from any zombie movie, but it's difficult to ignore that the most popular show on TV could be a major influence.
