6 Ways To Update Your Classic Black Leather Jacket

A perfect, well-made leather jacket is an investment. Regardless of how much you want to spend (and here are a few leather jackets for any budget), a classic black leather jacket is something that never goes out of style and will stay in your wardrobe forever (just ask my mom, who’s been wearing the same vintage Member’s Only motorcycle jacket since the '60s). It goes with absolutely everything — formalwear, workwear, athleisure — and will be a go-to staple in your wardrobe forever. When picking out your favorite option, consider choosing one with limited detail in true black. Also keep in mind that leather changes and softens as it's worn, so the more milage you get out of it, the more comfortable it will be. Like I said: It's an investment, people. And it's one that's actually worth it.

That said, having the same jacket season after season, while totally chic, can also get a little... boring. Luckily, you can DIY and totally recreate the classic piece for an entirely updated look. Here are six ways to make your old-faithful feel brand new again (and, if you're not a DIY kinda gal, six new, on-trend pieces worth investing in).

1. Embroider It

A little bit of colored thread and fabric, and a simple pattern add a easy detail to break up the solid black. Concentrate it around the sleeves, pockets and zippers for a solid balance.

2. Patch It

Bring out your inner motorcycle chick by sewing a patch (or five or ten) onto the back of your jacket. It's an easy way to add a personal touch and make you look extra badass.

3. Paint It

If you’re feeling extra creative (and are ready for a major change to the whole “classic black leather” look), take spray or acrylic paint and get to work on customizing the back of your jacket. This method was popular in the late '70s, when the punk movement was in full force. Try stencils or graffiti designs for professional looking details, or go free-hand for a truly unique look.

4. Stud It

Midnight Studded Jacket, $348, Nasty Gal

The "Glam Rock" trend has been all the rage this fall (thanks, Alexander Wang) and all you need is a hot glue gun and some metal studs to look like you’ve stepped straight off the runway.

5. Dye It

Trying to add a lil color to your all black errythang? Dip dyeing your leather jacket for a new, two-toned piece is shockingly easy.

6. Cut It

Two snips of the sleeves and voila, you have a vest and a whole new look.

Boring leather jacket, no more.
