2 San Bernardino Shooting Suspects Are Dead

by Celia Darrough

Update: On Wednesday, Dec. 2, a shooting at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California left 14 people dead and 21 wounded. Hours after the attack, police pursued information that led to a chase of a dark SUV, which was later determined to be a rental car. A shootout between police and the suspects left both suspects dead. They were identified as Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik, who were husband and wife.

According to SBPD Chief Jarrod Burguan, the four guns used in the shooting were purchased legally. The suspects were found to have 1,600 rounds of ammunition with them, and at a home they were renting in Redlands, California, law enforcement officers found 4,500 rounds of ammunition and 12 pipe bombs. No official motive has been confirmed, though a source told The Los Angeles Times that investigators are considering that it might be terrorism or workplace-related.

Earlier: A police pursuit ended with at least one San Bernardino shooting suspect dead Wednesday afternoon. Armored law enforcement vehicles surrounded a black SUV, which was riddled with bullet holes, a few hours after the mass shooting at the Inland Regional Center, which left 14 people dead and 17 injured. Officials said that one suspect was dead, one had been wounded, and another was on the run.

Sgt. Vicki Cervantes confirmed in a press conference around 4 p.m. PST that a suspect had been shot, and another suspect may be "outstanding." She was not able to confirm any deaths at that time. Information on the number of suspects involved is still unclear. Cervantes also noted that a police officer was injured during the pursuit and ensuing exchange of gunfire, but he seems to be in good condition.

Hundreds of shots were allegedly fired between officers and the suspects, and when a dark SUV that fit the description of a getaway car was stopped in the middle of the road, law enforcement swarmed the area with armored SWAT vehicles, an armored shield called a BearCat, and dozens of other police vehicles. Occupants of the residential neighborhood where the shootout occurred were asked to stay in their homes as law enforcement searched for the "outstanding" suspect.
