Robert Durst's Extradition Date Is Set

The real-life saga of a troubled real estate heir continued Tuesday when prosecutors confirmed Robert Durst would be extradited to Los Angeles to face a first-degree murder charge for the death of his former friend Susan Berman. The 72-year-old, who was the subject of an HBO documentary, The Jinx, has been linked to a number of murder investigations over decades, including his first wife, Kathie, though he has never been convicted.

L.A. prosecutors and Durst representatives came to an extradition agreement that would require Durst to be arraigned in L.A. Superior Court no later than Aug. 18. Durst was arrested in New Orleans in March for possession of a firearm, which is when he initially waived extradition. Since then, the eccentric millionaire has been stuck in a Louisiana jail on the illegal firearm charges. Durst's attorney, Dick DeGuerin, tells Bustle the agreement with L.A. prosecutors holds off extradition until Durst first resolves his firearms charges in Louisiana, which Durst is expected to change his original plea of not guilty to guilty, according to Reuters. Durst maintains he is not guilty in Berman's death, his lawyer says.

"This was an agreement we reached with the LA prosecutors to expedite Bob Durst's trial in the Susan Berman murder case," DeGuerin says in an emailed statement to Bustle. "Bob Durst didn't kill Susan Berman and doesn't know who did, and he's eager to prove it."

Berman, who became Durst's confidante after meeting him at UCLA in the '60s, was found in her home Christmas Eve in 2000 with a gunshot wound to the back of her head. Durst's first wife, Kathie, went missing in 1982. Durst was acquitted in 2003 for killing his neighbor Morris Black, claiming it was self-defense. The Jinx, which looked at these three deaths, stunningly ended in what appeared to be a confession by Durst over a hot mic that he "killed them all." Next summer could provide the first glimpse at Durst since The Jinx wrapped in March.
