Trump Explains Why He's Sitting Out The Debate

by Erin Corbett

Donald Trump has a habit of clogging the news cycle with his outrageous comments these days, and the Republican candidate has succeeded yet again, announcing that he will reportedly not be attending Thursday's GOP debate in Des Moines, Iowa. Not long after Fox News announced Thursday's lineup, Trump's campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, confirmed that the candidate will "definitely not" be attending the debate — a strange turn of events for the presidential hopeful, as Iowa kicks off its Republican primaries on Feb. 1.

Though he will still be in Iowa on Thursday, the Republican front-runner will instead host an event to raise money for the Veterans and Wounded Warriors... and possibly hide from scheduled debate moderator Megyn Kelly? Trump posted a video to his Instagram earlier today, saying, "Megyn Kelly's really biased against me... Do you really think she can be fair at a debate?"

Trouble between the Republican candidate and the Fox News anchor dates back to the first Republican primary debate in August when Kelly questioned Trump about his derogatory comments towards women he doesn't like, calling them "fat pigs, dogs, slobs, and disgusting animals." Trump told CNN in an interview on Monday, "I don't like her. She doesn't treat me fairly. I'm not a big fan of hers at all."

After announcing his decision not to attend the debate, he posted a poll to his Twitter account asking followers whether or not he should attend the debate. (I voted no, along with 40 percent of total respondents.)

I wonder if Twitter polls will continue to guide his decision-making processes if he's elected this November. Just think what he could accomplish on a global scale.

Regardless, a statement published on Trump's website notes:

Unlike the very stupid, highly incompetent people running our country into the ground, Mr. Trump knows when to walk away ... There have already been six debates, and according to all online debate polls ... Mr. Trump has won all of them, in particular the last debate.

Whether or not Trump actually does boycott Thursday's debate, I can't help but question how he has made it even this far, considering his fear of journalists (and bald eagles).

Either way, this stunt will most likely not damage his campaign prospects, as he's already bluntly stated that he could "stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody... and I wouldn't lose any voters, OK?"

Let's just hope the #TrumpIsDisqualifiedParty hashtag makes a strong comeback.
