6 Awesome Subreddits for Women

by Carrie Murphy

If you're an internet addict like me, chances are you poke around Reddit from to time, if only to look at the latest awesome IAmA or see what craziness has been posted on WTF. Reddit often gets called out for being a boys' club — and rightfully so — but there are some terrific female-friendly corners of the "front page of the internet," too. Here, six awesome subreddits you need in your life circa now:

1. /r/GirlGamers: You probably guessed it from the name, but this subreddit is devoted to girls and gaming. Although men are welcome to post here, the emphasis is decidedly on girl geeks and their concerns, everything from finding gaming partners to the depiction of women in video games to game news and advice.

2. /r/Feminisms: I always learn something from the intelligent, lively and sometimes heated discussions on /r/Feminisms. Notice that S on the end? That means this subreddit devoted to feminism is inclusive of feminists of all persuasions and perspectives. I also love that the guide the subreddit says "Check your privilege at the door."

3. /r/TheGirlSurvivalGuide: A subbredit that describes itself as "A survival guide of "life pro-tips" for the everyday girl." That's as apt as a description as I can come up with for this super useful subreddit, which contains advice and information about everything under the ladysun (Yes, you didn't know us ladies had our own sun?!) Go here to ask about sex, health, beauty, and more.

4. /r/UpliftingNews: OK, this one isn't really female-specific, but it's still great. If you're having a bad day (or week...or year...) pop in here to read about all the good things going on in the world. A few clicks around UpliftingNews will make you feel better, guaranteed.

5. /r/FemaleFashionAdvice: I used to really love fashion blogs, but now I often find them too aspirational and too expensive for my freelance writin' budget and low-key bohemian tastes. That doesn't mean I don't still like to read about (and write about!) clothes online, though—so, enter FemaleFashionAdvice as my new to-go spot for personal style tips, advice and idea exchange. People often post questions or photos about specific outfits, solicit recommendations, and more. It's like having the entire Internet as your fashion-obsessed best friend.

6. /r/BodyAcceptance: In a society that's constantly trying to tell us what's wrong with our bodies (and what products we can buy to become thinner, prettier and even more hairless!), this subreddit is a bastion of body confidence, understanding, support, and acceptance. /r/BodyAcceptance is worth a visit no matter what your shape or size.

Honorable Mention: /r/CurlyHair: Since I myself have curly hair, I love visiting here to see other curlyheads talking about products, styling, and learning to love your natural texture. Bonus: it's often free from the dreaded "frizz is hell" talk you see in most women's mags. Hey, I can honestly say I don't mind a little frizz on my curls...that's how curly hair is supposed to look.
