Putting Cable In 'Deadpool 2' Is The Right Call

Fox was so confident in Deadpool's success at the box office that they greenlit a sequel before the film even premiered, and they ended up being vindicated big time for their decision when Deadpool went on to destroy a number of box office records in its opening weekend. Now, fans of the Marvel Comics character are more excited than ever for a second helping, especially since learning that X-Men favorite Cable will be appearing in the Deadpool sequel. The news isn't really a shock. Star Ryan Reynolds has been pushing for it for some time, Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld is trying to recruit Jon Hamm for the role, and (spoiler) the film's second post-credits scene features Deadpool literally telling the audience that Cable will be in the sequel. But is it a good idea for Cable to appear in Deadpool 2 ?

Of course! Cable and Deadpool go together like peas and carrots. Hyper-violent peas and carrots who happen to hate each other most of the time. The two characters were both co-created for Marvel Comics by Liefeld in the early '90s, appearing in the pages of The New Mutants initially, and then both later finding great success in X-Force along with their own respective solo series. The pair have also teamed up for the acclaimed series Cable & Deadpool, which ran from 2004 to 2008. Given their similar history at Marvel, it's tough to talk about one without the other, so it makes perfect sense for them to team up on the big screen.

But even if that weren't the case, even if Cable and Deadpool didn't share such a storied history together in the comics, even if they didn't have such great odd couple chemistry, the time-traveling son of Cyclops should still show up in the Deadpool sequel because he's the biggest and most popular X-Men character who hasn't appeared in a film yet. Think about some of the characters who've gotten the call before Cable. Arclight? John Wraith? Quill? I've been an X-Men fan for a long time, and even I have to wrack my brain to figure out who some of these characters are. But even casual X-fans are familiar with Cable.

So he's a prominent X-Men character who's intrinsically linked to Deadpool, but then there's also the fact that lots of people are desperate to have him in the movie. As I already mentioned, Reynolds and Liefeld were both campaigning for him to appear in the sequel long before any sort of announcement was made, a kind of passion I haven't seen for a character since... well, Deadpool, and that obviously worked out pretty well. And now at least one actor is already throwing his hat into the ring in the hope that he can play the character. Avatar star Stephen Lang tweeted this on February 13:

And I have to say, Lang would be an excellent choice for the part. I mean, this guy looks like Cable just rolling out of bed in the morning, so imagine if he were actually outfitted for the role.

Finally, pairing up Cable with Deadpool in a movie would also make smart financial sense for Fox, as the two could end up building an X-Force franchise together. There have been a number of iterations of the X-Men's most hardcore team over the years, with Cable and Deadpool often serving as members. Other prominent members include Psylocke, who already looks like the best part of X-Men: Apocalypse , and Wolverine, who will likely be looking to return to the movies in a new form once Hugh Jackman hangs up his claws and retires after 2017's Wolverine 3 . Bringing these four together, along with perhaps another comic favorite like Cannonball or Domino, could end up being Fox's own R-rated Avengers, and who wouldn't want to see that?

Cable's involvement in Deadpool 2 has the potential to make the sequel even better than the original, and given that the first film might end up being the most successful movie in the entire X-Men universe, that's a prospect that should leave fans very excited.
