Celebs & Fans React To Shirley Temple's Death

by Ivy Jacobson

It's a sad day, because the legendary child actress, diplomat, and all-around accomplished woman, Shirley Temple, died at 85-years-old on Monday night. The actress charmed her way into American's hearts during the Great Depression era with her dimples and ringlets, and was best known for her songs such as "The Good Ship Lollipop" and "Animal Crackers in My Soup." Chances are, you've heard of the screen legend who started her career at three years old, watched her movies with your grandparents, or drank a Shirley Temple drink. Temple was a noted method actress, even at such a young age, and became a U.S. delegate to the United Nations later in life, after she retired from acting at 21-years-old.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt even attributed any happiness during such a dark time to Temple. "When the spirit of the people is lower than at any other time during this Depression, it is a splendid thing that for just 15 cents, an American can go to a movie and look at the smiling face of a baby and forget his troubles," Roosevelt said.

Temple will always be a cultural icon and a Hollywood legend — and child stars just aren't like her anymore. The world is mourning her death, as indicated on Twitter.
