5 Essential Flower Crown Tips For Festival Season

by Lindsey Rose Black

If you're planning on hitting up any music festivals in the near future, you know a flower crown is more or less a wardrobe essential. Whether you're going DIY with your flower crown or buying one, I asked pros for essential flower crown tips for festival season so that your crown looks fab and lasts as long as possible. As long as you follow the tips below from 1-800-FLOWERS.com expert Julie Mulligan, you won't have to worry at all about petals going limp or your crown falling apart!

P.S. If you want to make your own flower crown, but are intimidated by the process, there is seriously no reason to be. Bustle's own Morgan Olsen made an amazing step-by-step flower crown tutorial that couldn't be easier to follow. If it's your first time, she recommended buying more flowers than you need, remembering to grab some "filler" greenery, and of course, keeping calm if you mess up. Remember, it should be fun!

For more professional advice, definitely check out Mulligan's blog post on DIY flower crown-making. She breaks down the steps you need to follow for a "wire and tape" structured crown, with added hacks on how to glue in even more fauna for a dazzling headpiece.

To make the ultimate flower crown (and make it last), here are tips Mulligan provided exclusively to Bustle:

1. Create The Perfect Flower Combo

When it comes to her favorite floral combos, Mulligan recommends:

  • Roses + Berzelia Berries + Waxflower for a bright boho look
  • Hydrangea Clusters + Rice flower + Monte Casino for a soft, romantic vibe

2. Consider The Look You're After

She tells me, "The total number of flowers that you will need to create a flower crown varies and depends not only on the circumference of your head and where you want the wreath to sit, but also how full you want the wreath to be. For example, you could use as little as three roses nestled between clusters of foliage ... or create a crown that uses 10-12 roses with very few accent flowers or foliage!"

3. Get The Right Tools

If you're crafting your own crown, Mulligan advises grabbing wire, floral stem wrapper, wire cutters, and a hot glue gun.

4. Make It Last

"If you mist your crown with water, wrap it it plastic, and keep it in a refrigerator/cooler, your crown will last up to a week," says Mulligan. "You can also spray it with a product called Crowning Glory. This is a spray that is used by floral designers to add and hold in moisture, keeping fresh cut flowers more vibrant."

5. Use Hairstyling Products To Your Advantage

When I asked Mulligan if hairspray or gel would wreck my crown, her response totally surprised me! She explained, "Hairspray and hair gel will not harm your flower crown at all. As a matter of fact, you could use hairspray directly on your finished crown as a homemade preservative! Just let it dry first after spraying before placing on your head."
