Met Gala Dresses That Seem Impossible To Walk In

I would love to wear a good Met Gala dress just as much as the next fashion-obsessed kid. What I wouldn't particularly love is wearing a dress so heavily trained that walking might become an impossibility. The dresses of the 2016 Met Gala undoubtedly felt like futuristic sartorial playgrounds in the best of ways — but many of them weren't particularly practical. I guess that's part of the point, though. The Met Gala is beloved for its wacky themes and extravagant ensembles, and at May 2's "Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology" get-together, wacky and extravagant definitely made several appearances. Personally, it was the crazy long trains that blew my mind most of all.

I've never been the sort of human interested in suffering for fashion. Of course, I can't say for sure that the celebrities who opted for gowns as long as football fields are suffering. Maybe their dresses are as comfortable as standard legging and hoodie combos. Maybe...

Nevertheless, the gowns at the Met really do look difficult to maneuver oneself in. How do you prevent yourself from tripping over when your dress is longer than your body? How do you keep it from getting dirty? How do you even survive?! So without further ado, here are the many Met Gala pieces that don't look clumsy-person-friendly.

Do you see why the football-field analogy? How anyone could sport such an extravagant train and bear to do anything other than lie on the couch catching up on Game Of Thrones is beyond me.

2. Allison Williams

Please be careful on those stairs. Please.

3. Jennifer Hudson

Does Jennifer Hudson look like an extra in Swan Lake? Absolutely. But that doesn't mean her feathered train is any easier to walk in. And it's white. Such a risk-taker.

4. Emily Ratajkowski

Although not nearly as feathered and puffy as some of the other trains we've seen this evening, Emily Ratajkowski's dress is still a major trip hazard. But I must say, she's a great reminder of why black and white are sartorial classics.

5. Rita Ora

Talk about a statement train. Such elegance. Much impressed.

6. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

I tip my hat to anyone who dares to wear white in New York City in general. Props to RHW for wearing white on a flowing train that's going to be touching all the floors.

7. Bee Shaffer

Anna Wintour's daughter was always bound to make a statement at the gala. But I didn't expect Bee Shaffer to sport something straight out of Westeros. You go, girl. Just please, take care of that delightfully embroidered train.

8. Rose Byrne

Although not as monumental as some of the trains at the gala this evening, the tail of Rose Byrne's dress would likely still be enough to have me on the ground of the museum, and fast.

9. Kate Hudson

Folks are really bringing on the impossible hues atop impossible trains look this evening. If it works, it works.

10. Jessica Chastain

Because Jessica Chastain's royal blue masterpiece of a gown gives her a little more leg room, I'm willing to bet walking around is slightly easier than it is for some of her more bodycon-ed or mermaid-tailed counterparts. But the puffy train is still a tripping hazard if ever I saw one.

11. Kerry Washington

This look was somewhat unexpected for Washington, and for that reason alone it was magnificent. The gothic elegance is out of this world, and totally something I'd love to recreate. But the train? I'm not so sure.

12. Zoey Deutch

Actor Zoey Deutch slayed in a gown that was more floral than futuristic. I absolutely adore the print and texture, but I really hope no one steps on her train.

13. Blake Lively

Blake Lively, you are clearly a princess. But please watch your step on that staircase.

14. Nicki Minaj

Although I'm not sure whether I'd find the leather harness details of Minaj's dystopian-like gown difficult to breathe in, I know that the train of the gown would simply never survive if on my body.

15. Claire Danes

Claire Danes' glow-in-the-dark, trippy-hued gown undoubtedly won the evening. But was it a breeze to walk in? I have my doubts.

16. Lorde

As is not uncommon, Lorde looked like something of a cross between an ice queen and an alternative beauty guru at the gala. Her ruffled and layered gown is completely stunning, but I get the feeling the train might get caught in people's paths.

17. Emma Watson

I though the point of pants was to avoid all the fuss of ruffles and trains and trip hazards. I was so very wrong.

18. Katy Perry

Katy Perry knows how to make an entrance. If people can see the train of your dress from a mile away, I guess you can call it a memorable look.

19. Agyness Deyn

English model and actor Agyness Deyn slayed at the gala. However, I don't see how she is going to avoid having people step on her dress.

20. Bella Hadid

With such a long train, comes big responsibility.

These gowns are undoubtedly exquisite, as always. But trip-proof? That's another story entirely.
