This Hack Will Make Your Makeup Last

by Jessica Willingham

Makeup is all about rules, right? Nothing could be farther from the truth. Makeup is about making things work for you, not the other way around, so when you're priming your skin for a hot summer day and looking to make your makeup last, remember this one hack to know to make your makeup last longer.

Makeup used to come in a standard formula, but now brands have released endless formulations for all kinds of skin colors, types, and textures. Unfortunately, there may not be the perfect foundation out there for you, but no worries! You can mix brands, formulas, and even products to get stay-all-day makeup.

You probably know by now that foundation primers can make your makeup last longer. Sprays can hydrate and soothe, while liquid foundation primers can mitigate texture and create a barrier between your makeup and skin so your foundation looks flawless. But if you're not quite matte and not quite dewy, you can mix two or more primers together for the perfect combination.

I love mixing primers in with my foundation to sheer it out for the summer months, or mixing two different primers together for a custom solution to whatever skin problem I'm having that day. Mixing your primer doesn't only let you address any skin issues you're having, but it also helps your makeup last through anything.

Here are my favorite combinations for mixing primers to make my makeup stay put:

1. Matte + Dewy

Becca Cosmetics Evermatte Poreless Primer, $36, Sephora

e.l.f Studio Hydrating Face Primer, $4, Amazon

In the summertime, my skin changes from naturally oily to combination. This mix is perfect for that awkward, in-between state!

2. Color Correcting + Normal

Smashbox Color Correcting Primer, $39, Sephora

Laura Mercier Foundation Primer, $38, Sephora

If you need to hide some redness from a beach day or natural discoloration, mix a little color corrector into your primer. The normal primer will sheer out your foundation, so you can cover up without caking it on.

3. Texture Correcting + Soothing

Make Up For Ever Skin Equalizer Primer, $37, Sephora

Cover FX Calming Primer, $38, Sephora

Ease the cause of texture issues by smoothing and soothing your skin.

It might take some trial and error for you to figure out what combination works best for you, but once you figure it out, you will be thankful that you did. Hello, long-lasting makeup, goodbye melty foundation!
