Where In The World Is Robert Durst Now?

Robert Durst, the real estate heir who has been linked to more than three murders over the course of the past four decades, may finally be facing the full legal consequences of his alleged actions. What is Durst doing now? The imprisoned property investor will be moving to a new location soon, but not as a free man. Durst is currently being held in prison in Louisiana on federal firearms charges. The 72-year-old scion of the wealthy Durst clan was arrested at a New Orleans hotel on March 14, 2015 after a Los Angeles judge issued a warrant over the 2000 murder of his longtime acquaintance, Susan Berman.

At the time of his arrest, Durst was reportedly found with a weapon in his possession, while registered at a New Orleans Marriott under the alias "Everette Ward." Police also recovered Durst's passport and birth certificate, a sizable quantity of marijuana, maps of Florida, Louisiana, and Cuba, as well as a mask with grey hair attached at the scene. Investigators believe he was preparing to leave the country.

Aside from flagrantly flouting federal and state firearms law, Durst's alleged role in the murder of Berman, a Los Angeles writer, may finally be straightened out. Investigators have said that they believe Durst killed Berman execution-style because of her knowledge of his role in the disappearance and presumed murder of his first wife, Kathleen McCormack Durst. McCormack Durst was last seen in public in 1982; a New York judge granted Durst's petition for divorce in absentia in 1990, with Durst claiming "spousal abandonment" by his missing wife.

The investigation into her disappearance was quietly reopened by New York State Police investigator Joseph Becerra, who specializes in solving cold cases, in the summer of 1999. News of the reopened investigation was made public in October of 2000. Berman's body was found in her Los Angeles home on December 24.

Berman became Durst's close confidante while he was in California during the 1960s. She also provided the basis for his alibi during the initial investigation into his wife's disappearance, and facilitated his media presence during the same time period. The working theory is that Durst determined that Berman was a threat based on her knowledge of his involvement in his wife's disappearance.

Durst will be extradited to California to stand trial for Berman's murder no later than August 16 of this year. Until then, he'll remain sequestered away from the rest of society in federal custody in Louisiana.
