I'm Willing To Wait For LMM's EGOT

As awards season shifts from film to theater with Sunday's Tony Awards, everyone has got EGOT fever all over again. Will Lin-Manuel Miranda EGOT for Hamilton at the Tony Awards? Is this the year? I hate to burst your bubble, but the short answer is no. It's coming for sure, but not this time and not for Hamilton. Nobody is due to EGOT this Sunday, unfortunately.

As of this moment, Miranda only needs an Academy Award to EGOT, and that ship has sailed for 2016. However, if he wins an Oscar in the next two or maybe three years, Miranda will be the youngest person ever to EGOT — just behind Robert Lopez, who was 39 when he won for Frozen. Lopez completed his EGOT in 10 years, which Miranda could possibly beat by one year, or at least match. He can't win every record. It's fine.

If you are some kind of monster who doesn't think Miranda is deserving of an EGOT, don't forget that he has additional awards to spare. Hamilton won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Like, if there aren't worthy candidates in a given year, they won't even give that award out. There are only two PEGOTs in the world: Richard Rodgers and Marvin Hamlisch. Miranda would be the third.

He also recently became a MacArthur Fellow and won an Olivier for the West End production of his first big musical, In The Heights. As for the EGOT, here are all of the qualifying awards and upcoming opportunities that Miranda has — Hamilton may have dominated the scene in 2015-2016, but he has been around for a while.

Emmy

Miranda was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in 2014 for the Sesame Street song "Rhymes With Mando," but won a Primetime Emmy for a song that he and composer Tom Kitt wrote for the Tony Awards. I know that's a little Inception-y, but it's an epic, really good song that got an immediate standing ovation.

Grammy

Presumably, you caught Miranda and the cast of Hamilton performing and accepting their award for the cast recording. That was actually his second Grammy Award — the first was in 2009 for In The Heights.

Oscar

Disney's Moana, which will be released November 2016, is his closest opportunity and the most likely. Miranda is writing the songs for the animated film, which will star Dwayne Johnson, newcomer Auli'i Cravalho, and Hamilton's own Phillipa Soo. Disney tunes tend to win Oscars, and Miranda tends to win awards. The stars are aligning for him to EGOT at the 2017 Academy Awards.

There is also the possibility that the In The Heights movie, which is officially back on, takes home trophies. There's no release date for the adaptation yet. I'm not sure that Mary Poppins Returns, which Miranda will star in alongside Emily Blunt, is exactly Oscar-bait, but you never know.

Tony

While Hamilton is dominating many categories this year, it actually doesn't affect Miranda's EGOT chances at all. He won two Tonys in 2008 for In The Heights, so he's good. The first was for Original Score, and the second Best Musical. He was also nominated for Bring It On in 2013. This is his home turf. He has four opportunities to add to his Tony collection on Sunday. I don't think that anyone needs to worry about Lin-Manuel Miranda EGOTing before long. Stay patient, and that would be enough!
