Reasons Donald Glover Should Play Miles Morales

by Jordana Lipsitz

I hope everyone ordered their tickets for the hype train, because ladies and gentlemen, said train is leaving the station. The Hollywood Reporter announced Tuesday that the one actor the Internet has campaigned for to join the Spider-Man franchise for years, Donald Glover, might join Spider-Man: Homecoming . It wouldn't be as Spider-Man — the movie is already confirmed to star Tom Holland as a high school-age Spidey and begin production in late June — but still, the fact that Glover might actually be in the franchise is a Big Deal. Though things aren't certain yet — Glover is still reportedly "in talks" to join the project — and it's not clear who he'd play, I'm gonna go ahead and say it, I'm officially excited. And hey, just because Glover's role isn't a sure thing doesn't mean we all still can't have hope that he'll be playing Miles Morales — because Donald Glover should be playing Miles Morales. There's no one more perfect for the role.

Though Miles isn't Spider-Man, Miles is sort of Spider-Man: He was also bitten by a radioactive spider, and he takes over the role when Peter Parker dies. In 2010, there was a fierce social media campaign, #Donald4Spiderman, to get Glover to be Spider-Man in the second reboot of the franchise, The Amazing Spider-Man. Instead, the role went to Andrew Garfield, and Hollywood moved on — until now. Sure, Glover wouldn't be playing Spider-Man if he does join Spider-Man: Homecoming, but if he played Miles, he also kind of would be, because Miles eventually becomes Spider-Man in the comics. It'd be the perfect ending to the perfect social media campaign.

That's not the only reason Glover should be Miles, though. Here's why I'm #Donald4MilesMorales and you should be too.

1. The Internet Wants This So Bad

We have literally been waiting years for Donald to be Spider-Man. He can't be the main Spider-Man in this franchise, but there's no reason why he shouldn't be a Spider-Man, which just so happens to be who Miles Morales is. Kim Kardashian, I see your Paper photo shoot and raise you one Donald Glover as Miles Morales. The Internet will actually break.

2. The Character Of Miles Morales Was Literally Created For Him

According to USA Today, Bryan Michael Bendis decided to write the character of Miles Morales into Marvel Comics' Ultimate Spider-Man after he saw Glover's #Donald4Spiderman Twitter campaign and witnessed Glover dressed up in Spidey pajamas on the NBC sitcom Community. With that news, it seems kinda like a no-brainer, right?

3. He Already Plays Miles Morales On TV

Glover voice acts as Miles Morales in a spider-verse story arc in Ultimate Spider-Man. The series depicts Spider-Man becoming the newest member of S.H.I.E.L.D. on a team with four other teenage superheroes. In the series, Morales must work with the Spidey-Guys from alternate universes to fight the Goblin who's collecting all these Spider-kids DNAs. This experience has surely prepared him.

4. It Would Be Fun To See Him Work With Tom Holland

Pretty much everyone and their mother who went to see Captain America: Civil War agreed that the best part was this hilarious fresh and over-talkative Spider-Man ("Hey guys, you ever see that really old movie, Empire Strikes Back?") You know who's also really funny? Donald Glover, former writer on 30 Rock, standup comedian, and former Community star. Watching those two work together and joke together as two Spider-Men would be legendary.

5. It Fits Perfectly Into The Marvel Universe

Marvel seems to be looking to take over the world with all the movies, comic books, and television shows. These universes are all connected and they show it with all the multi-verses, and S.H.I.E.L.D. running amok, and characters popping in from one franchise to the other. It would be a perfect fit for Miles Morales, a character in a multi-verse, to sneak on in.

6. Morales Is A Parker Foil

While Peter Parker is all sorts of giddy to rush out and save the day, Miles Morales is slightly more hesitant. His uncle, Aaron, is a career criminal and Morales worries that the criminal bug is in his DNA just like the spidey genes. It would be fascinating to see these two battle out whether or not they should get into the vigilante game.

7. Donald Glover Is A Super Comic Book Fan

In his song, "Do Ya Like" (because this multi-talented dude is also a rapper known as Childish Gambino) he mentions his love of Spidey and his desire to be Spider-Man: "Baby, I'm your hero, Donald for Spiderman." This ultimate super fan should certainly be gifted for his efforts.

No matter who Glover would end up playing in Homecoming, it'd be great to have him in the Spider-Man reboot. He'd be certain to bring the charm and pizazz he always brings to the table in every performance.

But seriously, #Donald4MilesMorales.
