The Best MKA Looks From The '00s

by Sienna Fantozzi

Their fashion has become incredibly chic, simple, and streamlined, but back in the day, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen took a more fun and eclectic approach to their style, and you basically wanted to copy literally everything they did. Things have definitely changed a lot since then, so let me remind you of a few Mary-Kate and Ashley looks you were obsessed with in the early '00s. Though completely different from now, their style has always been on point.

While their style has definitely evolved and matured, it took the Olsen twins a few years to truly refine it, and they definitely experimented and changed a lot along the way. The early '00s may have been their best era for fashion, in my humble opinion, because they were finally old enough to get out of the whole twin-dressing-alike thing, but still young enough to play around and have fun with fashion (read: wear clothing we could actually somewhat afford to copy), so a whole lot of goodness went down back then.

From their ethereal dresses to their signature boho elements, MKA influenced so much of what I wore to junior high (seriously, not sure I could have gotten dressed without looking to them for inspiration), and given that they just turned 30, it seems a good time to look back and remind ourselves of where they started. Cue the nostalgia.

1. Grecian Dresses

MKA wore these Grecian-style dresses when they got their stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2004. They were so chic, classy, and polished, but totally retained their fun boho vibes, and it was everything you wanted to be at your next school dance.

2. Long Tunics Over Pants

Your parents questioned your sanity when you copied this one.

3. Newsboy Hats

I still own and wear one. #noshame

4. Long, Skinny Scarves

They served literally no practical purpose, but they were cute so who cares?

5. Kimono-Inspired Gowns

You probably never bought one because A) you didn't think it would fly in the halls of your junior high and b) because let's be real, where could you find a kimono gown that didn't look like a costume, but you loved it none-the-less.

6. Low-Slung, Embellished Belts

R.I.P. this.

7. Slacks & Halters

They sometimes dressed a little older than they were, but it was OK — they had that sophisticated thing going on. It was, you know, mature and stuff.

8. Pseudo Crop-Tops & Maxi Skirts

This was the Olsen version of the crop-top, and your parents hated it a little less than your attempts to steal Britney Spears's style.

9. Tops With Banded Waists

They made them look so cool.

10. Hair Poufs

Don't deny it — you totally styled your hair like this.

11. Dresses With Long Beads/Pearls

Ugh, could they be anymore chic?

12. Oversized Sunglasses & Leggings

When the Olsen's attended the 2008/2009 Chanel show in Paris, they not only started your love affair with gigantic sunglasses, but they also brought head wraps into your life and proved that leggings are totally cool.
