Emily Mortimer's Funny New Role Is Emily Mortimer

by Lia Beck

Some of you may know Emily Mortimer from The Newsroom, some of you may know her as Alec Baldwin's girlfriend with "Avian Bone Syndrome" from 30 Rock, and some of you may be like me and also have mistaken her for Ross' English wife on Friends until this very moment... But now, she will be known for a new, starring role that she created herself. Emily Mortimer will star in HBO's Doll & Em with real-life childhood friend, comedic actress Dolly Wells. Mortimer and Wells also co-created and, along with director Azazel Jacobs, co-wrote the show. Doll & Em is a comedy about female friendship which means HBO will now have two whole shows that fit this criteria. Huzzah!

If you couldn't tell from the show's title, on Doll & Em Wells and Mortimer play versions of themselves. Mortimer plays an actress living in Los Angeles who hires her long-time friend to be her personal assistant. Judging by the new trailer, it looks like a lot of the jokes are based around Doll, who is an aspiring actress, not wanting to be known as simply Em's assistant. In one funny moment, Doll tries to explain her job as an excuse to hang out with Em, but reluctantly has to agree when someone asks, "But... she's paying you, right?"

The first season of the series will consist of six 30-minute episodes and, reportedly, guest stars will include Bradley Cooper, Susan Sarandon, John Cusack, Ben Chaplin, and Andy Garcia. I also spotted Chloe Sevigny in the trailer. Doll & Em will premiere on HBO March 19 at 10 p.m.

I think it looks pretty funny. What about you?
