There Is No Dana, Only Sigourney Weaver

Ghostbusters is one of my favorite movies ever. It's wildly funny, has tremendous action, and is incredibly inventive and original. The movie also has an amazing cast, with some of the '80s top comic talent in Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Rick Moranis joined by '80s action queen Sigourney Weaver. So I'm definitely looking forward to the new Ghostbusters movie, which hits theaters on July 15. But many fans can't help but long for a bit of the old Ghostbusters to go along with the new, and are wondering if Sigourney Weaver is in the new Ghostbusters .

Fans of the original Ghostbusters have reason to celebrate, as Sigourney Weaver does have a cameo in the new movie. However, there is no Dana Barrett, only Zuul, err, only Weaver. What I mean is that the actress will not be portraying her character from the original film, because the new movie is a complete reboot of the series rather than a continuation. The new film essentially retells the story of the original, but replaces the original Ghostbusters with four new characters portrayed by comedians Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthey, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, respectively. So what part could Weaver be playing?

Unfortunately, fans will have to wait until they see the movie to find out. Weaver's cameo has not been revealed; nor have the cameos for other original stars Murray and Ernie Hudson. Annie Potts is reportedly playing a hotel clerk in the film, while Aykroyd appears as a New York City cab driver in a foreign ad for the movie. I'm definitely excited to see where Weaver pops up in the film, though fans wear almost denied their chance to see her — even after she'd already filmed her cameo.

According to James Desborough of the New York Daily News, the film had been undergoing an intense editing process that left the makeup of the final picture up in the air. According to his report on May 12, Weaver's role had been completely cut out of the film in one of the movie's final edits because, reportedly, "her involvement is not essential to the story." However, she was then added back in for the final cut, and should be in the version that fans see in theaters.

A part of me definitely wishes that Weaver was playing Dana Barrett in the new Ghostbusters, but the fact that she's in the movie at all is reason enough to be excited.
