Britney Spears' "Make Me" Video Has Arrived

by Kristie Rohwedder

Rejoice, Britney Army! On Friday, Britney Spears’s “Make Me…” music video featuring G-Eazy was finally unleashed onto the Internet, and man oh man, was this worth the wait. I am happy to report that the music video for the first single off of Spears's to-be-released ninth studio album is nothing short of Glory -ous. In the Randee St. Nichols-helmed vid, Miss American Dream Since She Was 17 and her buddies/Piece of Me residency backup dancers hold an audition for the "Make Me..." music video. And throughout the audition, there are several moments that—whether intentional or not—call to mind some legendary Britney Spears moments. And by "moments," I mean legendary Britney Spears music videos and legendary Britney Spears red carpet ensembles and legendary Britney Spears everyday looks.

...OK, I realize that I may be letting my superfandom get the best of me here (and yeah, that happens more often than I'd like to admit) but! I am not kidding when I say there are multiple costumes, backdrops, and scenes in the "Make Me..." video that reminded me of a handful of Spears's most iconic outfits, music videos, accessories.

Now watch me (fire off some weird hypotheses). Get it get, get it get it.

Are These Mesh Gloves...

...a subtle nod to the black gloves Britney donned in the "Radar" music video?

Is This Lace Dress...

...a subtle nod to the dress Britney wore to the 2001 VMAs?

Is This Bed Scene...

...a subtle nod to the "Perfume" music video?

...or a subtle nod to the "My Prerogative" music video?

Is This Move...

...a subtle nod to this "Work B*tch" music video pose?

(Oops, I'm really starting to spiral out of control here. I'm sorry, but I'm going to keep going. I hope that's OK.)

Is This Chair...

...a subtle nod to the chair featured in the "(You Drive Me) Crazy" music video?

...or a subtle nod to the chair featured in the "Stronger" music video?

And Are These Fedoras...

...subtle nods to the style of hat that may or may not have been invented by Britney?

I'm 99.9% certain that the fedora avalanche in this music video is not a coincidence.
