Beyonce ruled the 2016 VMAs on Sunday night just like the true queen she is. Her epic 15-minute performance stole the show with a medley hits from her visual album Lemonade . The pop superstar took home the Video of the Year award for "Formation," but why did Beyonce dedicate her VMA to New Orleans in her acceptance speech? Bey thanked her family and her team while on stage, before declaring, "I dedicate this award to the people of New Orleans. God bless you guys."
Well, if you haven't heard, the people of New Orleans — mostly nearby Baton Rouge — are dealing with floods ravaging the population. According to the New York Times, the Baton Rouge Area Chamber has estimated that there are more than 140,000 homes in the area and could have been affecting by the flooding — most of them located in Livingston and Baton Rouge. “It does take the whole community to recover from a disaster like this,’’ Brad Kieserman, vice president of Disaster Operations and Logistics for the American Red Cross told USA Today. “This is certainly the biggest natural disaster we’ve seen in the United States since [Superstorm] Sandy.’’
So Beyonce dedicating her award to the affected people means so much.
It's not the first time Bey has paid tribute to the state of Louisiana. Beyonce's video for "Formation" references the flooding that occurred during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Louisiana Creole culture, and the New Orleans police. It just shows the queen knows what's going on in the world and she's always willing to make a statement to help the affected.
If this night has proven anything, it's that everyone needs to bow down to the benevolent Queen B.
