Huma Abedin & Anthony Weiner Could Get Divorced

by Erin Corbett

Top Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin announced on Aug. 29 that she would be separating from her husband, former New York Congressman Anthony Weiner. Their split came in the wake of a new alleged sexting scandal which involved Weiner sending online messages to a woman, which was revealed on Sunday night by The New York Post. With the news of this latest scandal and their separation, will Abedin and Weiner get divorced?

According to The New York Times, Weiner resigned from office as a congressman in 2011, after his first sexting scandal, in which he sent messages and photos to women on the internet. He announced his resignation after accidentally tweeting an explicit photo of himself that he meant to send in a private message, The New York Times reported.

At the news conference during which he announced his resignation five years ago, Weiner said: "I am announcing my resignation from Congress, so my colleagues can get back to work, my neighbors can choose a new representative, and most important, so that my wife and I can continue to heal from the damage I have caused," The New York Times reported.

At this time, it is unclear whether Abedin and Weiner will divorce. However, she released a statement in which she noted that she would be separating from her husband and that they "remain devoted to doing what is best for [their] son."

Even in the midst of his various scandals, Abedin stood by Weiner's side in 2013, claiming that she was able to forgive her husband after going through therapy. However, Abedin has announced her separation from Weiner in the wake of his most recent scandal, which involved a "raunchy" photo he sent to a woman in 2015, in which he is seen lying in bed near his son.

According to The New York Times, Abedin has worked with Clinton for over 20 years, first as an intern when Clinton was the first lady. She would later work on both of Clinton's presidential campaigns. The New York Times added that Clinton has been supportive of Abedin through her various struggles with her husband, offering insights on how to move forward with her marriage with Weiner.

Abedin and Weiner have been married since 2010, and have a four-year-old son, Jordan Zain Weiner.
