DIY Harley Quinn Halloween Costume Hacks You Need

Come Oct. 31, there are going to be a lot of Harley Quinns walking the streets. After her big screen debut in Suicide Squad, where she was played by Margot Robbie, Harley Quinn is now everyone's favorite anti-hero. With her blue and red hair, sparkly jewelry, short shorts, and loud personality Harley is also the most recognizable member of the Squad. In other words, she's a Halloween-lover's dream come to life. Because Harley Quinn is so popular, there is no shortage of Harley Quinn Halloween costumes available for purchase this season. If you want to buy yourself one of those and call it a day, then be my guest. However, if you prefer to try your hand at a DIY Harley Quinn costume, or just a non-booty shorts version of the costume, here are a few suggestions.

Most Harley Quinn costumes feature her signature crime-fighting look: red and blue booty shorts, a "Daddy's Little Monster" t-shirt, fishnet tights, a "Property of the Joker" bomber jacket, and a red and blue wig. It's sexy, easy to spot, and, essentially, the outfit is Harley Quinn's very own superhero costume. Why dress up like Clark Kent if you can dress up like Superman? That said, there are a few other versions of Harley Quinn you can be for Halloween, like Belle Reve inmate Harley Quinn or pre-arrest Harley Quinn. Here's how you can make your own, unique Harley Quinn costume for Halloween.

1. Tattoos

Harley Quinn's tattoos are a crucial part of her identity in Suicide Squad, but they can be tricky to recreate. If you have a steady hand and some really good liquid eyeliner, feel free to try to draw a heart on your cheek — follow this Harley Quinn makeup tutorial by NikkieTutorials for tips on how to write on your face. But, if you're not super coordinated, I recommend ditching the DIY for this and buying some official Suicide Squad Harley Quinn temporary tattoos.

These temporary tattoos from Hot Topic also feature some of Harley Quinn's body tattoos, so, if you're not wearing pants, you can really commit.

2. Hair Color Spray

Harley's trademark multi-colored hair is another essential detail for anyone hoping to be Harley Quinn for Halloween. Luckily, it's a pretty simple look to put together: just gather your hair into two high pigtails and spray color on the bottom half using temporary hair color, like this Bwild Spray from Amazon.

3. Iron-On Letters & Patches

If you're looking to DIY your way to a Harley Quinn costume, then iron-on details are going to be your new best friends. Iron-on lettering can help you make everything from Harley's "Daddy's Little Monster" t-shirt to her "Property of the Joker" jacket, all without spending money on an official shirt and jacket.

Depending on how much effort/clothes you are willing to sacrifice to this Halloween costume, you can incorporate many of Harley's signature phrases into your look — a "Puddin'" tank top, for example.

4. Orange Jumpsuit

Be Harley Quinn post-Suicide Squad adventure by combining the tattoos and temporary hair color with an orange jumpsuit, perfect for every Belle Reve prisoner.

This pair of Red Kap Coveralls from WorkingPerson.com come in bright orange and are multi-purpose — use them next year to celebrate Halloween as your favorite Orange is the New Black inmate or Poe Dameron from Star Wars: The Force Awakens . Plus, you can easily add some of those iron-on letters to the jumpsuit to spell out "Belle Reve," or whatever your Harley Quinn-loving heart desires.

5. A Crazy Fun Attitude

Harley's biggest asset: her fun, devil may care attitude. Walk into your Halloween party feeling free and ready for some action, and you'll be the Harley Quinn MVP.
