What's That Haunting 'Power Rangers' Trailer Song?

by Amy Roberts

If you're anything like me then you've likely discovered the first Power Rangers teaser trailer that debuted at New York Comic Con on Saturday, and watched it, oh I don't know, a totally chill couple of dozen times already. And though the trailer literally only teases us with the slightest glimpse of the Power Rangers as we know and love them (in those iconic, color-coded power suits), it still manages to make the movie look pretty great so far. But, I also can't help but feel that part of my immediate oh my goodness this looks awesome reaction is probably based on that song which starts the trailer. You know exactly the one I'm talking about — and yes, I'm obsessed already. But, like me you may have also found yourself wondering what's the song in the Power Rangers trailer? Because damn, does it feel familiar.

And you'd be totally correct for thinking so, because the actual song is probably one of the most iconic country songs ever written — albeit, completely reworked in the form that we heard it in. So what song is it and who was it originally by? And who's responsible for this incredibly amazing rendition of it? And, perhaps most importantly, where the heck can you buy a copy? Well, OK, slow that thought process right down and first watch the Power Rangers trailer one more time to remind yourself of just how powerfully the song fits into the trailer:

Got it? OK. The song is a haunting cover of Johnny Cash's "Walk The Line," performed by the viral pop sensation Halsey. What's most striking about Halsey's arrangement of the song is how much slower and sultry her re-imagining of it is. Interestingly enough, according to Grant Marshall's book about the musician, I Was There When It Happened: My Life With Johnny Cash, "Walk The Line" was originally written as a slow ballad, rather than as the uptempo, slightly rockabilly song that it became. So in many ways, Halsey's cover version of the song is actually somewhat in line with (no pun intended) the original spirit of it.

Halsey's stripped down cover version of "Walk The Line" is the closing track of the deluxe version of her album, Badlands. As well as being available for you to listen to via the artists official YouTube page (below), the song is also available to stream via Spotify and to download from iTunes.

Whether or not the themes of the song (which Cash once described as being a "pledge of devotion" to his first wife), bear any relevance to the actual plot or character development of Power Rangers remains to be seen. I definitely saw a hint of romance in that teaser trailer which could make that a possibility, though, and I guess being a Power Ranger comes with it's very own pledge of devotion towards protecting the world from bad guys, in its own way.

Either way, it seems possible that we may be seeing the Power Rangers walking some kind of line of allegiance when the film comes to theatres on March 24. But, until then, I'm just going to go right ahead and listen to Halsey's cover of "Walk The Line" a few more dozen times.
