Coldplay's Touching Dedication To Mick Jagger

by Lia Beck

After stopping by Saturday Night Live over the weekend, Coldplay continued their short, six-date tour in support of their new album, Ghost Stories. On Monday night, at their stop at New York City's Beacon Theater, Coldplay dedicated "Fix You" to Mick Jagger. The Rolling Stones frontman was not in the audience, but the band took the opportunity to dedicate the song to Jagger who lost his long-time girlfriend, fashion designer L'Wren Scott when she passed away in March. Before beginning the song, singer Chris Martin announced to the crowd, "It's for Mick Jagger."

Only two days before the concert, a memorial for Scott was held in New York City, where the designer resided, at Saint Bartholomew's Church. The service was attended by friends and family of Scott including Jagger, Sarah Jessica Parker, Andre Leon Talley, and Ellen Barkin. At the memorial, Jagger shared stories of Scott and performed her favorite song, Bob Dylan's "Just Like a Woman." Previous to this, a funeral for Scott was held in Los Angeles shortly after her death. Scott passed away on March 17 after committing suicide in her Manhattan apartment.

After Scott's death, Jagger wrote on his Facebook page, "I am still struggling to understand how my lover and best friend could end her life in this tragic way. We spent many wonderful years together and had made a great life for ourselves. I will never forget her." The Rolling Stones postponed the Australian leg of their tour following the shocking news.

As for Coldplay's dedication to Jagger, the song "Fix You" is described by Rolling Stone as a "cathartic anthem" and includes lyrics, "And the tears come streaming down your face/ When you lose something you can't replace."

In addition to their tribute, Coldplay performed other hits as well as songs from their new album, Ghost Stories which will be released on May 19. For now, the band is gearing up for the release with six intimate shows in five countries. The band can also be seen on an NBC special airing May 18 called Coldplay: Ghost Stories. The special will show the band playing their new album in its entirety.
