Who Could Play 'AHS's Gentle Giant?

by Kaitlin Reilly

The American Horror Story creators really don't care if clowns give you nightmares — in fact, they hope that they do. Since the announcement of American Horror Story: Freak Show, creator Ryan Murphy has revealed several characters, including a killer clown (and you thought It was scary) and a two-headed woman, played by Sarah Paulson. Now, E!'s Spoiler Chat had revealed that the show will be casting another character — and this one is slightly less freaky than the others. According to E!, American Horror Story: Freak Show will add a "gentle giant" named Bobby to the cast.

There's no word on who will play Bobby on the small screen, though E! does reveal that the character will be an "extremely, extremely tall man," which seems to indicate that the role isn't going to go to an actor simply because he's 6'5". CGI will most likely help elongate this character, so what's really important is that the person has a giant presence on screen. There are several actors who could nail the role of the gentle giant on the show, and would make a great addition to the cast as a whole. Here are a few actors that could nail the part in Freak Show.

Rory McCann

As The Hound on Game of Thrones, McCann proved that he could be as vulnerable as brute. Given everything that has happened on Game of Thrones, he should have some time in the future to dedicate to American Horror Story. Oh, and did I mention he's 6'6"?

Djimon Hounsou

The former male model rose to acting fame with his role as kindhearted warrior Juba in Ridley Scott's Gladiator, proving that he can nail both the physicality and the gentle spirit needed to portray Bobby. Hounsou has a role in the upcoming Tarzan film and will star in the summer Marvel movie Guardians of the Galaxy , but he hasn't been on television since he voiced Black Panther in the Black Panther mini series in 2010 — let's change that, AHS.

James Cromwell

Cromwell is more "lanky" than "gigantic," but he's an American Horror Story alum, and as we all know, that means a lot on this show. As Dr. Arden, Cromwell was an overall bad dude — he was a former Nazi who did medical experiments on people whose morals he disapproved of. In real life, Cromwell wouldn't hurt a fly — or, well, at least a pig — he became an ethical vegan after playing a farmer in the movie Babe. Oh, and he's 6'7", which means you don't have to fake too much height for this guy.

Dylan McDermott

McDermott was absent from American Horror Story: Coven and I sort of missed his crying face. As a gentle giant, you know that's something we'd totally see. He may only be 6'0", but hey, that's what CGI is for, right?

Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson

Hey, those Game of Thrones guys are really tall! Bjornsson, who took over the role as "The Mountain" on Game of Thrones this season, clocks in at 6'9" and 419 pounds, and is currently the second strongest man in the world. (I can only imagine what the actual strongest man in the world looks like.) After that horrifying scene in Game of Thrones, it will be hard to imagine him as a "gentle" giant, but he definitely has the second part down.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

Johnson got huge for his role in Hercules, and those muscles probably aren't going anywhere for quite some time. Why not put them to use on American Horror Story: Freak Show? We already know that Johnson does family-friendly with roles in The Game Plan and The Tooth Fairy, so "gentle" is definitely on the table... though AHS: Freak Show definitely won't be for the kids.
