PETA Isn't Happy With Her — Again

by Kadeen Griffiths

To be honest, you would think that if Lady Gaga was going to get criticized for an outfit then it would be one that she was wearing. After all, Lady Gaga is pretty much the master of bizarre outfits. It's been four years and I still can't get that meat dress out of my head. However, Lady Gaga has been criticized by PETA this time, which should tell you all you need to know about why. Dressing our pets up is a pretty common practice and can even be adorable, but PETA is lambasting Gaga for adorning her dog Asia in heavy, uncomfortable jewels.

If it seems like complaining that you can afford to decorate your dog with jewels is a case of needing some cheese with that whine, the pictures might give you pause. Lady Gaga posted them to her Instagram two days ago in what was clearly intended to be an adorable photo shoot to show case the dog she loves so very much. She even captioned them with statements like "Little McQueen" and "I don't have time for this moms".

However, according to PETA's statement to US Weekly, "Lady Gaga may choose to decorate herself with elaborate and even uncomfortable outfits, but Asia doesn’t get to make that choice... Although it seems pretty clear that Lady Gaga loves Asia, we think Asia -- and all dogs -- are adorable without all the added flair. The best accessory for any dog is a comfortable, secure, well-fitting harness, which is perfect for long walks together."

PETA has more or less held a grudge against Lady Gaga since the infamous meat dress of 2010 and the organization has lost a lot of wide-spread respect because of their extreme methods and extreme overreactions. Most of the time, PETA is a punchline that ends with throwing a bucket of paint at a celebrity wearing a fur coat. However, just looking at that last picture makes me think that the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals might have had a bit of a point with this complaint.

Oh, there's nothing in the world that can, or should, stop pet owners from dressing up their pets as long as their pets are safe and comfortable. However, the headdress of jewels draped over Asia looks uncomfortable, like a muzzle or a mask that could make it a little hard for the dog to breathe. PETA can't know for sure that it's heavy, since Asia's head looks no more weighed down than in the other two photos, but I can't imagine that the picture wasn't immediately followed by Asia trying to shake those jewels off.

On the list of things PETA could get on her case about — have I mentioned the meat dress she wore in 2010 yet? — then this seems like it should have ranked pretty low. It's over the top, but not too much, and Lady Gaga doesn't seem like the kind of pet owner who would purposefully ignore her pet's personal comfort just for an Instagram photo. Then again, PETA hardly needs a reason to complain about Gaga.
