We're In Desperate Need of a New "Call Me Maybe"

by Alex Kritselis

There's a nasty little rumor going around online right now that Carly Rae Jepsen recently tried to pawn a $25,000 handbag because she was so hard up for cash. Supposedly, the shop wouldn't take the bag, so instead, Jepsen had to pawn a piece of jewelry to get the money she so desperately needed. Or so the story goes. Personally, I don't believe the tale for a second (after all, Jepsen just got done with a successful run as Cinderella on Broadway), but the rumor did bring the "Call Me Maybe" singer back to the forefront of my mind. "Hey," I thought, "when are we going to hear some new music from Jepsen, anyway?"

Many are quick to dismiss Jepsen as just another one-hit wonder, but I take issue with that characterization — Jepsen has TWO hits, thank you very much! In addition to "Call Me Maybe," "Good Time, her infectious duet with Owl City, peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. So there! Jepsen's major label debut, Kiss, is, in my opinion, an outstanding, criminally underrated pop album, and I've been anxious to hear more music from her ever since it was released almost two years ago. So what's the deal?

Well, as I said, Jepsen just finished up her Broadway run last month, and according to her Instagram, she's been hard at work on new music ever since:

Now, the last time Jepsen spoke about her new album in an interview was all the way back in February, when she told MTV that it would include both folk AND '90s-influenced songs. An interesting mixture, to be sure! Oh, and she also revealed that she had been working with Cyndi Lauper. That sounds amazing. Before that, she told Billboard in June of 2013 that she was creating new material with Benny Blanco (Katy Perry, Kesha, Rihanna), Josh Ramsay ("Call Me Maybe"), and Ryan Stewart ("Curiosity"). A solid crew, indeed!

Otherwise, details about Jepsen's new material have been pretty scarce. However, she did just recently say that she was starting up rehearsals with her band again:

That must mean that new music is coming soon, right? I can't say for sure, but it's probably a good sign! Carly, if you can hear me, stop breaking my heart. Please put out some new music ASAP because I love your voice and your unique brand of insanely catchy pop music. I also like the fact that you don't look a day over 18 even though you're approaching 30. Teach me your secrets. Is it fish oil? I bet it's fish oil.

While Jepsen may never be able to top the worldwide success of "Call Me Maybe," she's definitely capable of releasing another hit record (just take a listen to Kiss if you don't believe me). She's not a one-hit wonder — I won't even call her a two-hit wonder. I think Jepsen's going to make a big comeback and prove all of the haters wrong. Stay tuned...
