She Needs to Stop with the Repetitive Interviews

by Lia Beck

If I had a dime for every time Lindsay Lohan said she was getting her career back on track, I'd be making trips to the Coinstar constantly. (The Coinstar is still a current reference, yes?) In her latest claim that she's getting it together, during an interview with BBC, Lindsay Lohan said she never want to be a celebrity. She was also right on schedule with her explanation that she's a serious actress and that people forget that and yadda, yadda, yadda. You know the spiel. While I can throw shade and out-of-date references at Lohan's repetitive story every time it happens (i.e. A LOT), I can't help but always hope that she'll really pull it together this time. Or that time. Or that other time. Or all those time before that.

At this point, my hopes for Lohan don't stem so much from nostalgia for Mean Girls or having faith that she's willing to better her life, but more from the fact that it'll be incredibly sad if this same story comes out for the next 30 years. Can you imagine Lindsay Lohan in her fifties, still with parts in unsuccessful films here and there, a couple more reality shows under her belt, a handful more made-for-TV movies, and maybe a kid or two, still giving interviews about a career comeback? That isn't how I want to see things go for her and they can change if she simply stops talking about herself in the same way.

Take Lohan's interview with BCC. She says,

People have certain perceptions of me. For a long time, people looked at me as kind of a celebrity, which is something I never wanted. That's not what I got into this industry for. I've been doing this since I was three years old and I've been on set since I was six. People kind of forgot that, and I think now is a good time... And what better than to do it with the great people that I'm working with on stage in London ... so that people can focus on the fact that I'm in this industry because I'm an actress and an artist and not just someone you take photos of?

She's right. People do have "certain perceptions" of her and, of course, celebrity isn't the reason she got into the industry. But I would say that instead of feeling she needs to prove something — that she's not a celebrity, that she's an Actress — that she should just take the roles she wants (and frankly, it's more like the roles she can get, for now at least), and do the best she can with them (showing up for work would be a good start) and enjoy that. Forget proving something. Feeling she needs to prove something means defensive interviews that continue this cycle of "Lindsay Lohan tries to get it together for the millionth time" with quotes that can be used as evidence. She should just act and talk about her acting. She should be saying, "I'm going to be in Speed-the-Plow in London and it's freakin' awesome," instead of what she actually said: "However long it does take, I'm willing to do it. I'm willing to work for it."

It's those kind of quotes that make me think we're going to have a 47-year-old Lohan still stuck in this I'm-working-on-it place, which is a place she's really just building for herself at this point.
