Miley Cyrus Says She's Done Twerking, and 10 Other Great Quotes From the MTV VMAs
There are so many things about the MTV Video Music Awards that make them memorable. Between the performances (no one will ever forget Miley's Twerkgate 2013) and the outfits (ahem, Lady Gaga's meat dress), it's always a night to remember. But something beyond the songs and the fashion that keeps us tuned in? The quotes. Whether they're accepting awards or presenting them, celebrities say the darndest things during the event-filled awards show. (Don't act like you still don't throw Kanye's "Imma let you finish, but..." quote into casual conversation. It's a VMA classic!)
Sure, sometimes they may fumble over their words or take jokes too far, but here's a list of celebrities who got it right on Sunday night. From Miley Cyrus to Jay Z, let's take a look at the best quotes from 2014's show... before I let you finish.
Gwen Stefani talks girl power
When Gwen Stefani was presenting the award for “Best Female Video” with Snoop Dogg, she said, “This year, the ladies are taking over.” Based on how the night went, this couldn’t be more true!
Katy Perry's acceptance speech
Not only was her outfit amazing, but Katy Perry’s acceptance speech for “Best Female Video” was also awesome: “That’s a great way to start out the night. Getting a moon man… Thank you so much. We put a lot of work into this song. We’re gonna party tonight!”
Lorde introduces her bestie
Lorde was the one who introduced Taylor Swift’s performance of “Shake It Off.” And she gave her friend a most precious intro, saying, ”She’s tall, blonde, and doesn’t wear quite this much black… I’m so proud to introduce my friend Taylor Swift.” They may seem like opposites, but that doesn’t mean they’re not super close.
Miley's acceptance speech
Instead of taking the stage when she won the award for “Video of the Year,” Miley Cyrus chose to give the spotlight to an important cause. Focusing on young people who are homeless across America, she let her pal Jesse, a homeless youth, speak for her. He said, ”A dream you dream alone is just a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.”

Common's moment of silence
In light of what’s been happening in Ferguson, Common asked for a moment of silence in remembrance of Mike Brown and peace. He talked about the power of hip-hop, saying, ”Hip-hop has always been about truth and has always been a powerful instrument of social change. Hip-hop has always presented a voice for the revolution.”
Kim K Introducing Sam Smith
Unlike when Kendall Jenner flubbed the name of 5SOS at the Billboard Awards, Kim Kardashian — sorry, Kim Kardashian West — was a pro at the teleprompter. She introduced Sam Smith’s performance, saying, “Sometimes you hear a voice and know it’s special.”
Rita talks about kicking ass
During the VMAs pre-show, Rita Ora commented on her performance with Iggy Azalea, saying, “We’re gonna kick boys asses because that’s what they deserve.” Yup, the “Black Widow” singers nailed their performance.
Taylor's subtle Nicki reference
When performing “Shake It Off,” Taylor said this mid-performance: ”I know it’s the VMAs but I’m not jumping off there. People getting bit by snakes, it’s dangerous.” Seems totally random, right? But it could be a reference to the fact that one of Nicki Minaj’s back-up dancers got bit by a snake when practicing for “Anaconda.”
Beyoncé steals the show
As expected, the highlight of the entire night was when Beyoncé performed a medley of songs from her album when accepting her Vanguard award. Mid-performance, she simply said, “Welcome to my world.” Afterwards, she added, most likely referencing rumors of her impending split with Jay Z, ”I have nothing to say, but I am filled with so much gratitude.”
Jay Z crushes all divorce rumors
The most precious family moment in history? Jay Z presented Beyoncé with her award, saying, “The recipient of the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award, the greatest living entertainer, Beyoncé.” Bow down, people.
