Former Miss Spain Comes Out As A Lesbian

by Caitlyn Callegari

Patricia Yurena Rodriguez Alonso, Miss Spain 2008 and 2013 (you go, girl), just proved that her beauty and her poise, while standout, aren't her best attributes. It's her bravery and spirit that's truly remarkable. Earlier this week, Yurena made the decision to bare her soul to the world, or rather, her social media followers and Patricia Yurena Rodriguez has come out as a lesbian. The unassuming Instagram post features the former pageant queen and her girlfriend, intimately locking eyes on her bed. Controversial? Hardly. A typical Instagram post by all assertions. But it is still groundbreaking when you consider, as BuzzFeed points out, that Yurena is the first ever openly gay Miss Spain.

Though the picture is the first real evidence, that doesn't mean it's the first time that she's spoken out about being gay. Yurena had penned, as the International Business Times mentions , a blog post where she explains "her struggle to accept her sexuality," and also her aspirations for a more open and accepting future. It seems that since that post in February, Yurena has made sure to keep her mind focused on that future and so she didn't keep mum with all of the buzz regarding her picture. Instead, she sent out a bubbly and cheerful message of thanks saying, "I published quite naturally and impulsively. I appreciate the outpouring of support and even more to rejoice in my happiness. Thank you!!"

Encouragingly, Yurena's nonchalance in posting the picture, and subsequent pictures since the infamous one, shows that her hope from her aforementioned blog post is coming true. "Ideally, I would love to one day live in a society where coming out is no longer necessary because we don't make assumptions about one another's sexuality and homophobia is laid to rest," she exclaimed. Seems like you're on the right track, Patricia.
