Did Nicki Plan Her Wardrobe Malfunction?

by Lia Beck

If you caught Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards, you probably noticed that a certain rapper was EVERYWHERE. Nicki Minaj performed three different songs: her new single "Anaconda," "Bang Bang" with Jessie J and Ariana Grande, and "She Came to Give It to You" with Usher. While there were notable parts of each performance, "Bang Bang" was the most memorable because Nicki Minaj had a wardrobe malfunction that distracted from the song itself. While watching the show, it was hard to tell at first what was going on. Was Minaj trying out a new dance move or was she really clinching her dress shut so the world wouldn't catch a glimpse of nipples Minaj? It soon became apparent that Minaj was doing the latter, but what's still not so clear is whether Minaj's wardrobe malfunction was pre-planned.

According to TMZ, Minaj practiced her malfunction during rehearsals. The website spoke with a source who saw Minaj's rehearsal Sunday morning and says that the rapper came out on the stage with her dress already unzipped. TMZ also reports that Minaj was seen "trying to manipulate it to see how much would be exposed." Furthermore, reportedly there was a changing room right near the stage so Minaj would should have been able to change properly in time. On the other hand, it did look like her microphone was just tossed on to her head, so either she was fully committed to this "accident" or she really did have a problem with her dress.

Minaj addressed the issue on Instagram by posting a photo of the performance along with this caption:

God is good. As long as a nipple didn't come out to play, I'm fine. Love my team. CASPER, Rushka, Adam, Oscar, Joyce, Gee... Many more to name but they're all winners! No weak links. There's no greater feeling than having ppl who inspire u and who work passionately and relentlessly to get the job done. the myx is starting to make me feel real good right now thank u to Slim, Richelle, Katina and the entire REPUBLIC team.

Myx? Enough with the product placement, lady!

The thing is, whether the incident was on accident or on purpose, Minaj totally didn't need to have a wardrobe malfunction. Beyoncé may have stolen the show at the end, but up until that point Minaj was the most memorable thing primarily because she was everywhere. (Also, butts. But mostly because she was everywhere.)

Here's a few reasons that, if Minaj did plan her wardrobe malfunction, she definitely didn't need to:

She was already a showstopper in this dress

For Minaj, this dress is shockingly subtle, and she looks fantastic. No need for antics.

She made a gif for the ages

Nicki Minaj performing "Anaconda" was going to be one of the most memorable moments of the night even before it happened. I mean, did you see that music video?

She performed "Bang Bang" with Jessie J & Ariana Grande

Like "Anaconda," this opening performance was going to be huge no matter what since the song is already a big hit. If Minaj really did plan the dress incident, I sure hope Jessie J and Grande knew about it, because otherwise that is pretty rude seeing as it distracted from their singing.

She bounced butts & shoulders with Usher

Minaj also performed with Usher which produced another ridiculous gif.

You see, she didn't need any more attention by having a near nip slip. She was going to be memorable no matter what.
