Steal Clara's Time Heist-Worthy Makeup Look

by Rosie Narasaki

Did you catch this week's episode of Doctor Who? Because it was kind of epic: The Doctor and Clara (along with a couple companions-of-the-week) had to break into the universe's most impregnable bank (now there's a log line). All while Clara rocked some of the most amazing smoky eye makeup I've seen in this history of time and space.

We got to see Clara switch up her personal style — she left off her usual cutesy retro duds in favor of a super-stylish suit. Apparently, she donned the suit for a date with the elusive Danny Pink — though who do they think they were kidding? It was totally the perfect outfit to rob a bank in, and she upped her makeup game accordingly, going for a smoky winged shadow look, paired with pinky-nude lips and her customary bold brows.

Let's break it down:

The face:

  • Foundation: Since I've been feeling lazy lately, I've been turning to my IOPE Air Cushion: it's a cushion BB, which makes for super easy application, plus it has SPF 50. Add that to the fact that it offers surprisingly good coverage with a dewy glow, and you've got yourself a winner.
  • Blush: I'm pretty much exclusive with Benefit's Rockateur at this point, so luckily, it happens to be perfect for this look. Clara's rocking a pretty natural flushed look on the apples of her cheeks, so I just did the creepy blush-smile, tapped this onto my cheeks, and swept upwards towards my temples.
  • Brows: I filled them in with a pretty heavy hand, using my go-to Laneige Natural Brow Liner (another South Korean product, though it's pretty cheap on Amazon).

The eyeshadow

The eyeshadow's really what got me interested in this look in the first place! After all, there were some pretty lengthy close-ups of Clara's tightly closed eyes, so there was lots of time to study it:

So, as you can see, it looks like a slightly metallic medium brown shade, drawn in a slightly winged-out shape that doesn't reach above the crease! Here's my take on it:

I started off with a base of Smog (from Urban Decay's first Naked Palette — in fact all colors in this tutorial are from there), a bronzy brown shade.

Next, I added some definition by blending some Half Baked in the inner corners, and some Dark Horse onto the outer wing.

The eyeliner

The eyeliner was super simple: it's just Clara's go-to simple cat eye! And since you've got all the shadow going on, it's not even all that noticeable, so you don't even have to draw that great of a line (which is always a plus in my book).

Next, smudge some dark brown liner onto your lower lash line, connecting it with the wing you drew on your upper lid.

The finishing touches

Add mascara, a rosy nude (I used Laneige Silk Intense Lipstick in Glam Pink, which I happened to review for National Lipstick Day), and an eggplant tuxedo jacket, if you have one.

Alas, I had no eggplant tuxedo jacket, so I tried to make do with a navy blazer, which is decidedly less fabulous:

But all in all? Easy, breezy, and perfect for a date and/or a bank heist!
