Unicorns Are Feminists, and Other Fun Facts

by Emma Cueto

It never ceases to amaze me just how misunderstood feminism is, and how the people who don't like it never seem to be able to accurately describe it. Here to help those perpetually ignorant people, though, is the Internet, complete feminist blogs and websites, and the hashtag #FeministFacts, which is full of absolutely true facts about feminism. Yep, guys, none of this is made up. Absolutely none of it. Even the stuff about magic powers.

The tag was kicked off yesterday by feminist writer Laurie Penny, and pretty soon feminists from all of Twitter were chiming in to add to the growing compilation of facts about feminism. Because if everyone else is going to make up crazy stories about the things feminists do and believe, why can't feminists do it, too? We are all about equality after all.

People say a lot of crazy, inaccurate things about feminism, up to and including the idea that we are secretly an international conspiracy running the world. And there are days to get upset about all those things — like days when the dregs of 4chan try to slander black feminists on Twitter, for instance — but then there are other days when you just have to laugh and lean into the lunacy of it all. Because contrary to popular belief, feminists really do have a pretty great sense of humor.

Beware the feminists!
