'Hitch' Is Back, People

by Christine DiStasio

Break into your celebratory "Q-Tip" dance right now, people. Will Smith and Kevin James' 2005 rom-com, Hitch is going to be a TV series on FOX. Which is great news because Hitch is actually a pretty great movie and I'm not just saying that because I really love Will Smith. I actually genuinely enjoy this film to this day, so judge away, friends. Anyway, Deadline revealed on Wednesday that FOX has put a Hitch TV series into development and it'll be a half-hour, single-camera comedy series based on Smith and James' 2005 film. Honestly, I'm wondering why someone didn't think of this before because Hitch is gold and there aren't nearly enough rom-com series on primetime television.

According to the report, Will Smith and James Lassiter's production company, Overbrook Entertainment, will produce the Hitch TV series just like they did with the film back in 2005. The series adaptation will be "a workplace comedy that explores dating and sexual politics," written and co-produced by Made of Honor's writers Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfront. I'm into it, I'm really into it — I just hope it actually works out this time. Deadline also reminded us in its report that this is the third time Hitch has been adapted since the film's release — so, third time's the charm, FOX?

Now that we've already established that this is a GREAT idea — if FOX can pull it off — who could possibly play Smith's title character? Assuming, of course, that Will Smith won't be reprising his role, even though doing so would make this a dream spin-off. Is there any other actor in Hollywood that possesses the ability to be both incredibly smooth and incredibly clueless at the same time? Smith's set the bar high, but I've got a few suggestions for who could play Alex "Hitch" Hitchens in the upcoming series.

Michael B. Jordan

I know, I know — Michael B. Jordan's super busy starring in the Fantastic Four reboot, but he's pretty damn good at comedy. And, while we're at it, have you seen him as Vince Howard in Friday Night Lights? Because he sure as hell has that "smooth operator" thing going on. Also, I just love Michael B. Jordan and would love an excuse to see him on TV every week even more.

Mackie's a fellow superhero — the actor just starred in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as Falcon, but he's also got an impressively long non-superhero resumé. And the charisma to match.

Ryan Hansen

The Veronica Mars star has experience playing a guy who's a bit full of himself, but he's definitely got the right sense of humor to be a little out there. And we all know Hitch himself was the perfect mix of those two qualities.
