Can 'Nashville's Terry Compete with Bubba?

by Keertana Sastry

For anyone who has been only watching Nashville lately for Juliette and her baby drama (and to be honest, that is the best storyline at the moment because Juliette Barnes is amazing), take another look at a storyline that is really starting to get interesting: Scarlett's new friendship with the homeless man Terry, who also sings and can write great lyrics. In the Season 3 Nashville episode "Nobody Said It Was Going To Be Easy," Scarlett pushed Terry to talk about his family and he used to be a singer before he freaked out and left. While I am getting incredibly intrigued as to what happened in Terry's past, it's also quite difficult to look past the fact the fact that the actor who plays Terry, Mykelti Williamson, also played Bubba in Forrest Gump .

You can't think of Forrest Gump without remembering a few iconic things: The idea that life is like a box of chocolates, and Bubba naming types of shrimp. Bubba and the shrimp scene is so iconic, there's even a chain of restaurants named after Bubba and his greatest love and ensuing business with Forrest, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. But what are some of the other extremely memorable Bubba moments from Forrest Gump? It's more than just shrimp, I can promise you that.

Who can forget one of the best introductions on film from when Forrest gets on the bus for the army and met Benjamin Buford Blue (that's his given name), aka "Bubba" because that's what people call him. There's a reason Forrest and Bubba became "best good friends," and with this warm introduction, as well as Forrest's introduction to the world of shrimp, it's easy to see why.

And of course, let's not forget Bubba's tragic death, when Forrest tried his damnedest to save him and bring him home as he had wished. Unfortunately, Bubba succumbed to his wounds before realizing his dream of becoming his very own shrimp boat captain.

Even after Bubba's death, Forrest made sure to keep his promise to Bubba to visit Bubba's family and buy a boat to become a shrimp boat captain despite everyone, including Bubba's family, asking him if he was stupid. But as Forrest always says "Stupid is as stupid does."

It's difficult to see past Bubba in Mykelti's other roles, even as the fascinating Terry, but if his storyline keeps unfolding in a heartbreaking and real way, Mykelti has the chance to turn Terry into the second best character on Nashville this season.
