Tragedy Strikes Set Of Martin Scorsese's 'Silence'

This is absolutely shocking. According to CNN, major tragedy has struck the set of Martin Scorsese's upcoming film Silence in Taiwan, after an accident that occurred on the film's set Thursday left two studio construction workers injured, and one dead.

Per the reports of the incident, the accident was caused by a structure collapsing when workers were attempting to repair it — apparently, there were prior concerns that the structure (which was meant to be used as a building for the film's scenery) was unsafe, so the repairs were actually being made to reinforce and fix the problem. In a statement, Taipei police spokesman Chen Chung-Ren said that the accident had tragically left two set workers hospitalized — one in serious condition — and one dead.

The film is an adaptation of the Shusako Endo novel of the same name, and follows the story of "a pair of Jesuit priests who journey to Japan to investigate the alleged apostasy of another evangelist." It's set to star Liam Neeson, Ken Watanabe, Girls star Adam Driver, and Andrew Garfield.

In a statement released to Deadline , a spokesperson for the film said in a statement that the film was in pre-production at the time of the tragedy. "Everyone is in shock and sorrow and expresses their deepest concern and sympathy to the families of the individual who died and those who were injured," the statement read.
