100 Years of Beauty, Part Three is Lovely, Yet Sad

by Lauren Turner

Over the past few months, 'Cut' has been revolutionizing the way we look at the history of beauty starting with the first two installments in their 100 Years of Beauty in 1 Minute series. This time, 100 Years of Beauty in 1 Minute, Part Three features Iran. And while the other videos have covered looks that progress from ultra glam to a hint of wild child, I think this latest video has a deeper message about the rights of Iranian women and how they've changed over the years.

Much like the first two videos, part three goes through the major time periods, starting in 1910 and ending with today. And after watching it a few times, I realized how Iran's beauty today has basically reverted back to the looks from 1910 and the '20s. Although she's wearing a dab of lipstick and her eyebrows have had some work done, the idea is still there: she's covered up.

The craziest part about it all is that the video shows how free and wide-ranged Iranian women's beauty once was: The deep lip, rosy cheeks, and big hair of '40s. The pink lip, mod-eye makeup and Amy Winehouse-esque hair of the '60s. Even the dark eye and bombshell waves of the '70s can all be seen in the other videos. But what isn't in the other videos is the burka, scarf, or the need to cover up the woman's body.

After watching all three parts, what do you think 'Cut' is trying to say?
