Shailene Woodley Will Get MTV's Highest Award

by Keertana Sastry

Emma Watson, Emma Stone, and Channing Tatum. These are the past recipients of MTV's Trailblazer Award, given out during the telecast of the MTV Movies Awards. The award is given to someone who spearheads the way for those who work in the entertainment/movie industry, and considering her incredible achievements in such a short time, Shailene Woodley is definitely the right choice to receive the award this year. Woodley's co-star and friend Miles Teller will present the award to Woodley during the Amy Schumer-hosted MTV Movie Awards Sunday, April 12th, and I couldn't be more excited for Woodley to receive the award and show everyone why she is more than a trailblazer for film, she's a trailblazer for strong young women everywhere.

The cool thing about the award recipients so far is that three out of the four are women, women who advocate for equality, strength and individuality. For those who may not remember Emma Stone's acceptance speech in 2012, she spoke about using her inspirational trailblazers as a way to be herself, to spark originality. "I know that when you're a teenager, and even sometimes when you're an adult, what sets you apart can feel like a burden, and it's not. And a lot of the time it's what makes you great." Watson's speech was all about pouring your heart into what you truly believe in which is something she clearly does every day, especially with her "He For She" campaign for gender equality. So what makes Shailene Woodley a trailblazer?

She's Incredibly Well-Spoken About Positive Body Image

She may not totally understand the true meaning of the word feminism and how it is more than just a label, but Woodley is easily becoming a spokesperson for rocking positive body image for any size or shape for women. "I’m in a place where I feel healthier than I’ve ever been, and my body is exactly where it wants to be... I feel like I’m a woman," she stated about her own body in last June's Instyle cover interview.

She's Ridiculously Spiritual About Living In The Moment

Seriously this is some next level, yogi stuff. I am feeling it.

"It’s important because I saw somebody—what I thought was me—in a magazine once, and I had big red lips that definitely did not belong on my face. I had boobs about three times the size they are in real life. My stomach was completely flat. My skin was also flawless. But the reality is that I do not have those lips and my skin is not flawless and I do have a little bit of a stomach. It was not a proper representation of who I am. I realized that, growing up and looking at magazines, I was comparing myself to images like that—and most of it isn’t real. So (a) I don’t really wear makeup that much anyway, so part of it is just a selfish, lazy thing, and (b) I want to be me. I do think it’s fun sometimes to dress up for the Oscars or for certain events—I get to be like a five-year-old again, wearing my Cinderella dress. But for some events where it’s a more casual vibe, I just want to be me."

This. Just this. She even opted to film The Spectacular Now completely make-up free.

She Is Unapologetically Herself

You've all heard the stories of her "hippie lifestyle," the whole brushing her teeth with clay and peppermint oil, harvesting her own herbs, her go-to haircare and skincare line "Living Libations," being able to pack everything she owns and uses into one suitcase, and so much more. But isn't that just the best? Doesn't that just prove that she refuses to be anyone but herself? For that alone, she blazes the trail for so many young people in the world trying to find themselves, and she hopefully will blaze the trail for Hollywood to make more movies and shows representing real women.
