Manhunt For Suspect Who Killed A San Jose Officer

Authorities said a veteran San Jose police officer was shot and killed Tuesday night while responding to a report of a suicidal man. The shooting occurred in East San Jose, California, in the area of Senter Road between Umbarger Road and Balfour Drive. The officer's identity has not been disclosed as of late Tuesday night.

A massive manhunt is currently underway as police look for the suspect. CNN reports that armored vehicles have been sent to the scene.

According to NBC affiliate KNTV, Albert Morales, a San Jose Police Department spokesman, said at around 6:48 p.m. local time officers responded to a report of a man with a gun who threatened to kill himself. When police arrived at the scene, they were met with gunfire that reportedly came from a high-powered rifle,The San Jose Mercury News reports. In a statement, Morales said:

A veteran San Jose police officer was struck by gunfire and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

According to The San Jose Mercury News, this is the department's first line-of-duty death in 14 years. The deceased officer was the 12th officer killed in the San Jose Police Department's 166-year history. On its Twitter account, the San Jose Police Department confirmed that a veteran officer was fatally shot.
