This Hack Fixes Those Awkwardly Long Hemlines

by May Sofi

While midi skirts have become a popular trend recently, they aren't for everyone. Luckily, Refinery 29 shows us how to fix an awkward hemline with an easy trick that will take you from drab to fab — no sewing required! If you're unfamiliar with the term, midi skirts have long hemlines that hit somewhere between the mid calf and the ankle. Supermodels and fashion bloggers may be gung ho about the style, but the truth is, it can look kind of awkward on some people.

The trick to making them work for all heights is quite simple, really. Refinery 29's Connie Wang explains that all you have to do is make a knot on the inside of the garment, either at the front or the side. This in turn shortens the length, and gives you a cool high-low style. Voilà, you had a brand new mermaid skirt!

We have all come across a situation in which we fall in love with a piece of clothing, but it doesn't quite fit right. We buy it anyway, convincing ourselves that we'll get it hemmed or tailored as soon as we get home. I don't know about you, but I've had an overflowing pile of ill-fitting items that have needed to be altered for years now. Solving the problem with little tricks on our own makes life a whole lot easier. The mermaid style isn't exclusive to midi lengths either — you can easily do this with too-long maxi skirts and dresses.

Just follow these 3 simple steps and you're good to go.

1. Front Or Side

The first step is choosing where to tie the knot, either front and center, or off to the side. Both achieve the mermaid effect.

2. Knot Inside

Next tie a knot on the inside surface of the dress or skirt (it's more concealed that way).

3. Tuck In

Lastly, just tuck the knot under and you're all done!

Here is the finished look. Pretty cool, eh?
