9 Songs We Never Want to Hear in a Commercial Again

Listen, we love another earworm as much as the next human. Music is fun, and pop culture is fun, and so when we're standing in a room full of people and we all know the words to the same song, it's a cool kind of group connection — you can witness this phenomenon for yourself anytime you get a bunch of millennials together and play vintage Britney Spears or Destiny's Child.

It happened with Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" in the summer of 2012, and with "Blurred Lines" (*sigh*) in the summer of 2013 — but it's not just the radio airwaves that bombard us with certain songs. This is 'Merica, after all, and in 'Merica we live by the law of the advertiser. And apparently the law of the advertiser is choosing from a catalogue of the same 50-something trendy songs circulating at the moment. Maybe in an effort to get us to buy things and go see the movie they're shilling out of sheer exasperation?

A lot of these are songs that we genuinely love — but whether it's accompanying a souped-up family car zooming down the highway or trying to get us to tune into The Vampire Diaries this week, we could just do without the modern day Don Drapers continually shoving these songs down our consumerist throats every day of our lives.

"Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons

This song was a little indie for a while — and then it was literally everywhere every time you turned on the radio or your television.

(And yes, we are still confused as to why the music video for this song involves muppets)

"Black Skinhead" by Kanye West

We think someone should probably high-five Kanye West for the fact that he's getting his racial politics out their through cell phone commercials. Feels kind of quietly revolutionary.

(Kanye West has probably already high-fived Kanye West for that.)

"Too Close" by Alex Clare

We're not entirely sure we've ever actually heard this one outside of the context of a car commercial.

"Get Lucky" by Daft Punk Feat. Pharrell

They may have burned Colbert by standing him up for his show, but Daft Punk had a pretty good summer, considering all the cash they no doubt racked in from ad work.
