Will Bruce Help The Transgender Community?

by Julie Alvin

The two-part Keeping Up With The Kardashians: About Bruce special answered so many questions about the reality tv star's gender identity and plans for transition, and gave us a window into how his family reacted to the news. Since the Diane Sawyer interview, we've also seen how the transgender community is reacting to Bruce's revelation and the possibility that he will be seen as a major voice in the transgender movement going forward. And it seems that both Bruce and his family are hopeful that Bruce's impact on that community's progress will be a positive one.

The program opened with a message from Bruce saying that one of the primary goals of airing this special was to give insight into what happens within a family when one of its members comes out as transgender. In the note, he expressed hope that this transparency could offer comfort and guidance to other families experiencing the same trauma. This goal was a theme that carried throughout the special.

"The transgender issue right now is kinda where the gay issue was 30, 40 years ago," he said. "A lot of people don't understand it ... We need tolerance for that community. Because of the situation I'm in, I think we can do a lot of good."

Kris expressed hope that "maybe it brings some comfort and hope to somebody going through the same thing," to be witness to how this family takes Bruce's transition in stride. Kendall mentioned that this struggle could be a theme in Bruce's motivational speeches in the future, which could bring awareness of transgender issues to a whole new audience. Scott agreed, saying he "could do a lot of good…help a lot of people.”

Bruce closed the issue by discussing how he hopes his story can help others dealing with gender dysphoria and their families.

"The only thing I want out of this is just to help people. Not just the trans community — it's really bigger than that, it's so much more," he said. "There are so many things about tolerance towards people, about understanding of people. We need more tolerance in this world towards our fellow man. We are all human beings put on this earth, we need to learn to live together. "

Let's hope that he achieves this goal.
