Kimye Had Surprisingly Humble Beginnings

by Lisa Fogarty

Kanye West may be forthright, but Kim Kardashian is fierce. In a recent interview with Access Hollywood's Billy Bush, Kim Kardshian said she dug Kanye West so much, she was the one who pursued him after her divorce from Kris Humphries. But that's where any semblance of modernity ends with their courtship because, believe it or not, they kept things sweet, traditional, and respectful.

Kimye "do" marriage like a couple of rock stars — their charmed life includes frequent-flyer miles, close relationships with Anna Wintour and John Legend, and, not a bouquet or two, but (literally) thousands of white Mother's Day roses to express appreciation. They're attached at the Cavalli jeans in public, but we still can't help but assume the superhero duo is always either minutes away from breaking up or cheating. I mean, that Paper magazine cover. Kanye's perpetually pissed-off snarl. Their bombastic, over-the-top and far too passionate romantic displays and tokens of affection. Who do they think they're fooling?

But the more we learn about the beginning of their courtship, the more we realize Kardashian and West followed the rules, honored their past relationships, and deserve the thick-as-thieves bond they share (I mean, Kim K is the only person on the planet who both respects West's rants and is able to translate them into English).

Here's what she told Bush about how they finally got together:

When I first met him, we worked on a project together and there was definitely a spark, but we were in other relationships and we kept our distance. We stayed in touch here and there and then when he wasn't in relationships, you know, it's just our timing would not always coincide.

Can I get an amen? They were hot for each other, but had enough sense and self-control to know few lasting relationships grow from planting poisoned seeds. There may have been more than a few thoughts of cheating, but if Kardashian is to be believed, no vows were broken in the creation of Kimye.

The reality star says she waited six months after her divorce in 2012 and then thought, why the hell not? I'll give cute Kanye a call:

I called [Kanye] because I'm sure it was really hurtful that I got married and, even though it's not like we communicated all the time, I knew what he was thinking. So I thought he was going to call me as soon as he knew that I was single again. He didn't, and so I called him and I said, "Hello? I thought you were at least going to call me and 'I told you so,' something?" And then — he's always been a good friend to me, like, we've always been there for each other — then he invited me to a fashion show of his in Paris and I went, and then the magic happened.

And the rest was history.

Kardashian continues to rock my preconceived notions about her and her relationship values. Her relationship with West has changed her for the better — and she returns the favor by accepting and loving him — warts, rants, and all.
