Lanvin's Alber Elbaz Praises Caitlyn & Kim

by Marc Cuenco

A-list celebrities like Emma Stone and Kim Kardashian wear his designs on the red carpet, but Lanvin's Alber Elbaz says his life isn't glamorous compared to others in the industry. During a candid interview with Alina Cho at the Met, the Israeli-born designer opened up about his life outside of fashion. Elbaz says that while his muses and models share their extravagant lifestyle on social media, he's a lot more content with the simple pleasures of staying at home.

“People think that in fashion you wake up at mid-day with a glass of Champagne,” Elbaz said. “After work, I’m watching the Kardashians and ordering pizza."

Speaking of the first family of reality TV, Elbaz sang praises about Kim Kardashian — who wore Lanvin on her Vogue cover — whom he considers not only a personal friend, but also a nice person, role model and a smart girl. The designer also shared his thoughts about Caitlyn Jenner's Vanity Fair cover debut and her highly publicized transition. "I'm happy that someone who has a dream made it come true," he said.

Elbaz has been inspired by strong women even before starting his career at Lanvin 14 years ago. After working for Guy Laroche and Yves Saint Laurent, he was approached by Lanvin owner, Chinese businesswoman Shaw-Lan Wang, to revive the 125-year-old luxury brand. Since then, Elbaz has turned Lanvin into one of the most iconic and respected womenswear labels in the world.

“At the time, I said I’m only going to work with people I love and design for women I like,” he said. “I like women who take charge of their lives. It’s much more difficult to be a woman.”
