Target's Swimwear Commercial Is Body Positive

by Julia Guerra

If you’re anything like me and obsess over the retail giant that is Target, you probably thought your one-stop-shop for anything and everything couldn’t get any better — but it has. Target launched a body-positive swim wear commercial Tuesday that asked real women with different body types what they look for in a bathing suit. A mass retailer that knows one size doesn't fit all? I always knew Target was a gem.

The fact of the matter is that women come in all different shapes and sizes, despite society's push for all of us to comply and mold to its specifications. There is no such thing as one-size-fits-all when it comes to women’s clothing, especially swimwear, in which we make the bold decision to put our bodies on display by showing some skin and reveal what we may consider to be our imperfections. One type of bathing suit will never cater to the desires of every woman.

Target recruited Marie Claire Senior Fashion Editor and stylist Zanna Robert Rassi to sit down with four diverse women and discuss their swim wear essentials: how they like it to fit, what part of their body they’d like to emphasize and what part of their body they feel insecure about.

Before you head out to the store to bathing suit shop, understand what it is that you are looking for. What parts of your body are you most proud of and enjoy showing off? What parts of your body are you most insecure about? Once these questions have been answered, finding the right pieces becomes a little bit easier.

After getting a sense of what each woman was looking for, Rassi took to the swim suit rack to find each woman find a suit they love. Take a look at the bathing suits these women felt most fab in, and maybe get inspired to take on your swimwear qualms once and for all.

Chantè Burkett

Burkett expressed that she's insecure about her stomach and asked for a suit that accentuated her waistline.

Nashelly

Pops of sheer fabric emphasize Nashelly's shape in this sexy one-piece.

Nikki Minton

Nikkin Minton told Rassi that she admires her long torso, but struggles to keep the girls up top in check. For those looking to have more control over their bust in their bikini, opt for a top that is heavy on the underwire.

Sarah Boyd

Sarah Boyd is petite, but she told Rassi that she'd like to have some curves. Rassi picked out a triangle top to create a curvy illusion paired with a skimpy bottom to give her bottom a little more shape.

The temperatures are rising and summer is underway which means swim season is upon us. This year, however, shopping for a bathing suit does not have to be such a struggle. Thanks to Target and Stylist Zanna Robert Rassi, you too can find a swimsuit that you truly love.
